A Case of Grave Corruption There Heald needed were College the back in Salinas Criminal 1898-99? when Justice they Actually students were there from really was no Heald College Salinas in 1898; the nearest campus was located in Santa Cruz, and a major in Criminal Justice had not yet been thought of. Appropriately enough, the case began around Halloween.

The sheriff of Monterey County had been accused of borrowing names from tombstones to perpetrate the diversion of county funds, intended to feed and cloth prisoners in the Monterey County Jail, into his own pocket. The accusations had been leveled by Mr. H. R. Farley, editor of the Gonzales Tribune.

Farley used his newspaper to bombard the sheriff with multiples of charges, focusing on the by-now infamous tombstone scam. Farley declared himself a candidate for sheriff and turned his newspaper to the task of touting his many alleged attributes. Most Monterey County residents evidently favored an honest, god-fearing man even if selfproclaimed. Letters praising Farley's efforts at revealing the truth poured in. The results showed themselves in the November election.

The former sheriff was ousted; criminal charges were pending. H. R. Farley was in. Celebrations over the former sheriff's ouster were soon blunted however.

Rumors of ballot-box indiscretions troubled the holiday season. A reporter for the Monterey New Era wrote: "County Supervisor Field, from Soledad, is in town on business Heald College's staff helps prospective students seek funding. cial aid cannot be estimated until application forms are completed. The nature of the business, it was implied, could prove dire.

In truth, Supervisor Field was investigating allegations of votes for H. R. Farley having come from the Monterey graveyard. Had the new sheriff taken a page from the former sheriff's book? Or had the new sheriff used the same trick in jury-rigging charges against the former sheriff? Or were all charges spurious? Supervisor Field, interviewed just before Thanksgiving while staying at the St. Charles Hotel, refused comment.

The supervisor only noted that he would most likely take his Thanksgiving dinner from the St. Charles' board (buffet table). If so, it required no cold case investigation to prove that Supervisor Field's purse was not emptied. The hotel asked for a delicious Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings. About the charges and countercharges involved in the case of grave corruption, who is to say? We'll leave that decision in the hands of Criminal Justice students, Heald College Salinas.
