By Beth Hudson Of The Morning Call CHAMPAIGN, III Joe Paterno said he and his team had a "bad taste" in their mouths following last week's loss at Michigan. Illinois coach Ron Zook likely wishes the Nittany Lions had tried Scope or even that yellow, medicinal Listerine. Instead, the Penn State football team cleansed its collective palate by punishing an Illinois squad that fell significantly short of hapless for most of the evening.

To understand how ugly this game was, consider On its way to a 63-10 victory on Saturday, Penn State (7-L 4-1) took a 56-3 halftime lead. That was not only a school record for points in a half, that was the most Penn State had led by at intermission since the 1947 team had led 55-0 at halftime over Fordham. Of course, this was against a Big Ten team and it was without Penn State freshman receiver Derrick Williams, who broke his arm last week against the Wolverines. Michael Robinson completed Vm mi fife i or io passes ror rv4 yaras ana four touchdowns two to Deon Butler in the first half. When he wasn't throwing touchdowns, he was running for them seven carries for 69 yards and two touchdowns before turning over the reins to sophomore Anthony Morelli late in the second quarter.

If Illinois had a shining moment in this game, it was in the first five minutes. The Illini put together a 12-play, 57-yard drive one that didn't include a third down until the Uth play of the drive. But it stalled when quarterback Tim Brasic threw incomplete on third-and-U at the Penn State 24-yard line. Raul Vasqutl KRT in the second quarter against Illinois. Robinson played less than a half, but PENN STATE QUARTERBACK MICHAEL ROBINSON carries the ball into the end zone in for a touchdown set a Nittany Lion record with six touchdowns in a game four passing and two rushing.

The Nittany Lions' win was their most lopsided since 1993. Seth Pcrlman Associated Press 1A a note of sober doom, saying he was more worried about this game than any before it.

That most likely was before the coach watched film of the Illinois defense and realized even he could throw for four touchdowns against it. But his point was well taken. In the span of seven days, the Lions went from WOGENRICH PAGE CC2 the half, and by then Illinois was chop-blocking Michael Robinson. Not to pile on, but Illinois, play some defense. When a receiver is open 10 yards behind the secondary, it's time to, you know, get a new secondary.

Penn State's merciless, 63-10 victory over Illinois on Saturday night clearly was meant to be an exorcism. This week, Paterno sounded vertical passing game. Had the Lions attacked Michigan in the first quarter as they did Illinois, the finish might not have been so extreme. Not to nitpick, but Where was Anthony Morelli? Penn State led by 35 before the Illinois band's spit valves had dried, and the backup quarterback was nowhere in sight. He didn't emerge until 1:19 remained in CHAMPAIGN, III Not to belabor the Michigan game, but Where was this last week? It turns out that the Lehigh players could not only talk a good game, but they could play one as well with their new QB at the controls.
