I wonder what's on the menu? For the last three years, this newspaper has been run by a computer. I don't know how it works. All I do is type these words, and they show up on. a little black screen. Somehow, through the wonders of electronics, they get transcribed into print and eventually show up in the paper.

I. like the computer for the most part. It doesn't use paper and it corrects mistakes with the push of a key. But it does have its drawbacks. Sometimes it breaks down, and any stories on the screen disappears forever.

Once in a while a story gets shipped out to be printed and never gets there. It gets stuck in the twilight zone or just floats off into space. Last week the computer nearly did me in. I had just finished typing a story and was about to sign off the computer. But instead of hitting the "sign off" key, I acci- CARPET CLEANING Can You Afford Not To Get The Best? The word "killed" immediately flashed on the screen, and just like that, my story was dead. OK, it was my mistake, but it couldn't happen with an old fashioned typewriter. The computer also has a nasty habit of erasing whole paragraphs when all I want to do is erase one letter. The temptation to hurl a computer across the newsroom is overwhelming at times. I resist that temptation only because, at $4,500 a piece, I'd need a lot of paychecks to replace one.

Besides, if you're not nice to them, the computers can be very vindictive. Last week the computer printed the wrong version of a page one story, and when it appeared in the paper at least one grown man was observed crying. The computer was absolved of all blame in that slip-up, but I still don't trust it. I've seen movies where computers take over spaceships, and I think it's happening in the newsroom. I've got to warn my editors before it's too Wait.
