Nov. 3, 1976 Vineland Journtd-2 Democrats Sweep 3 Legislative Elections Helstoski, Facing Trial, Loses Re-election Bid NEWARK (AP) Democrats swept to victory Tuesday in three special legislative elections, allowing the party to maintain its hefty majorities in both houses of the New Jersey Legislature. Camden's Democratic Mayor Angelo Errichetti doubled the vote of his Republican rival, Helen A. Wise, in winning the 5th District state Senate seat vacated when John Horn resigned to become acting commissioner of state Department of Labor and Industry. Incomplete results showed Errichetti with 27,274 votes to 12,772 for Mrs.

Wise. In the 7th Assembly District in Burlington County, Democrat Herman Costello edged Walter L. Helstoski, 51, was the only incumbent congressman in New Jersey to suffer defeat. Helstoski had squeaked out a narrow victory in a recent primary, but he lost to Hollenbeck by 18,000 votes, winning only 44 per cent of the vote in the predominantly Democratic district. "The indictment had to be the underlying thing," In a bitter concession speech, Helstoski asserted the voters should have presumed him innocent of the charges until proven guilty, rather than be swayed by publicity about the indictment.

He said, "People take it for granted and say, 'That's what's what because I read it in the Smith Jr. for the seat left vacant by the resignation of George Barbour, who joined the state Public Utility Commission. Costello tallied 35,126 votes to Smith's 31,771. In the 13th legislative district, Democrat Helen A. Szabo topped Republican Carmen Armenti to win the seat vacated when Assembly Speaker S.

Howard Woodson resigned to take the post as president of the state Civil Service Commission. She received 33,535 votes to her opponent's 26,755. Gov. Brendan T. Byrne said the victories showed New Jersey voters wouldn't take their frustrations over the state income tax out of the Democratic party.

EAST RUTHERFORD (AP) Rep. Henry Helstoski, burdened by a federal bribery indictment, has been defeated after 12 years in Congress. The liberal Helstoski, traditionally an easy winner, was beaten by former Republican state Sen. Harold C. Hollenbeck, 37, who campaigned hard on the corruption issue.

Helstoski is scheduled to go on trial in several weeks on charges he took $8,375 in bribes from South American aliens in his district in return for legislation that delayed deportation proceedings against them. He has denied the charge. Both candidates agreed the indictment was the deciding issue. 1 HENRY HELSTOSKI HAROLD HOLLENBECK WE GLADLY REDEEM FEDERAL GOVT.
