Police. Our police are assuredly not so vigilant as they ought to be, even though we do not admit worse suggestions about some of them. Bobberies have lately been committed under such circumstances as render it quite mysterious how they could have escaped prevention, had the roost ordinary attention been pnid to their duties by those who are paid to guard our property and the perpetrators have escaped detection, when it would seem that it would need no very extraordi nary amount of acumen and perseverance to ferret them out On Saturday night for instance, the house of Mr. Bachino. in Jackson street First District near the corner of Claiborne street, was en tered about 8 o'clock drawers, press, boxes, dec, were broken open and plundered, while the inmates were supping; in the kitchen, neighbors hsd not yet retired, and the police ought to have been on the watch.

Vet the robbery was accomplished without interruption. A short time ago, the resi dence of Mr. Crosart, over his shop, at the corner of Marais and Jackson streets, that is closely in the same neighborhood as that of Mr. Bachino, just alluded to, was entered during the night and robbed of some $300, and, to this dsy no sign of a detection of the thieves hss been given. Similar eases are of constant occurrence throughout the city.

Yet in nearly all cases there appears to be such marks of suspicion at would, in the poaes sion of shrewd and active officers, lead almost cer tainly to the apprehension of the actual offenders. This is the case, we are Informed, with respect to the one committed on Saturday night, and to which we have alluded. We hope that, if this is correct the offenders will not be suffered to escape. 5t. Ciiables Tkbatxx.
