That just goes to show what good sense children have. Who wouldn't be embarrassed to be a part of "Sleepaway Camp?" Apparently not the aunt, who appears to be either doing a Boy George impression or auditioning for "The Ministers." She looks right at the camera with a look in her eye that screams, "Here I am Holly-woodr Even the depictions of violence are ludicrous. When the cook is scalded, it looks like they smeared Crazy Glue all over his face to simulate burns.

When one of the campers is killed, we are shown a silhouette of arms extended, fingers flailing in the shadows. When Mel discovers the camper stabbed in the shower he does the kind of double-take that went out with silent movies. It's really too bad the man who made this movie has been encouraged in his chosen career with a degree in filmmaking. And it'll be even worse if this film makes money. It probably will, too.

It looks like "Sleepaway Camp" cost about $37.50 to make. Even so, it isn't even worth $1 to see. "Sleepaway Camp" is now playing at the Lehigh Valley Cinema. No stars. Scenes of skinny-dipping.

Graphic violence. Vulgar gestures. Profanity. Rated R. JANUARY CLEARANCE! ALL REMAINING MEN'S WOMEN'S Camp Arawak ownermanager Mel (Mike Kellin) recoils in terror upon finding another victim.

By PAUL WILLISTEIN Entertainment Editor Were "Sleepaway Camp" camp, it possibly could be excused. But "Sleepaway Camp" is intended to be a bona fide horror film. Instead, "Sleepaway Camp" is simply horrible. Robert Hiltzik, executive producer, writer and director, made the movie during a one-year hiatus between graduation from Williams College and attending the New York University Graduate School of Film, from which he graduated in June vith a master of fine arts. If his pro-essors get a look at "Sleepaway Camp," they should ask him to return the degree.

Hiltzik instead deserves an MBA, because he raised the money for the film while a student Not surprisingly, "Sleepaway Camp" has the look of a student film poor script, lousy direction, improper lighting, shots held too long, mundane camera angles, terrible acting, poorly recorded dialogue, a sound track bought from a sound library and cheap title overlays. "Sleepaway Camp" is a waste of celluloid, electricity and popcorn. Angela (Felissa Rose) and cousin Ricky (Jonathan Tiersten) attend the' dumpy-looking Camp Arawak, where during the course of the summer a series of brutal murders takes place. First, a vat of scalding water falls on the cook. (Was the food that lousy?) Next, one of the campers is stabbed at night while canoeing on the lake.

Then, a nest of bees stings the camp bully to death. And two of the camp teases are done in one is stabbed in the shower, the other with her curling iron. See what an introductory college psychology course can lead to? Watching "Sleepaway Camp" is like being forced to watch somebody's home movies. The lingering image is of children running past the camera.

Some of the campers are laughing because they are embar (Mike Kellin), a real "Might as well pack up and sell out. Nobody's gonna send their kids here again." Mel suspects cousin Ricky is the killer. The girls and boys have been taunting Angela because "she's kin-da shy" (catatonic would be a better description). So what does big-hearted Mel do? He beats Ricky to a pulp. But Mel gets his an arrow through the windpipe.

Then, just to vary the action a little, four or so more campers are killed in their sleeping bags. So guess who the killer is? Angela, who in the final scene kills her friend Paul (Christopher Collet). The explanation is that Angela is actually a boy, Peter, who was renamed by the aunt with whom shehe lived with after herhis brother was killed in a boating mishap. In a flashback TODAY'S QUESTION iA hM, fe How can wolves breed with dogs? Won't the offspring be sterile? I have always thought that by definition a species is a group of animals that can breed with each other and not with any other such group. What's up? A "Species" is a word that has been used to mean different things at different times, but is currently best defined as a reproductive community, a group of organisms that habitually breed with each other and not with the members of some other group.

As Dr. Niles Eldredge, a paleontologist who is curator of invertebrates at the American Museum of Natural History points out, this is not to say that a species is a hard and fast genetic unit; a reproductive community is defined by what actually happens in nature, not by what could happen or even what does happen under some other circumstances. For example, the American bison (Bison bison) and the European bison (Bison bonasus) differ little in appearance and breed with each other in captivity, producing fertile offspring, but in nature they are separate reproductive communities because, for one thing, they are thousands of miles apart. As a practical matter, many species are defined by anatomical characteristics because biologists do not know what their actual breeding habits may be (this is especially true in paleontology, where the species are no longer alive). Whether individuals of two species are actually capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring is a question that can often be answered only by experience.
