ByKslthGroUer OF THE MORNING CALL WORCESTER, Mass. Chris Lum looked at his name atop the leading rushers Saturday afternoon and just smiled. "That's definitely a career-high for me," Lehigh University's junior quarterback said. "And that includes high school." Lum was the game's top rusher with 64 yards on eight carries, but made an even larger impact with three touchdown passes as the Mountain Hawks beat Holy Cross 34-17 at Fitton Field to win their fifth straight game and combined with Colgate's win over Lafayette earn at least a share of the Patriot League title. Lehigh (7-2, 3-0) can clinch the outright championship and earn the league's automatic FCS playoff berth with a win at Georgetown next week.

No other team in the league has fewer than two losses with two weeks left in the season. Lum wasn't perfect. While he completed 21 of 33 passes for 212 yards, he threw an interception that ended a Lehigh drive at the Crusaders 6. But both Lum and the Mountain Hawks overcame their mistakes with enough plays on both sides of the ball to insure the program's first seven-win season since a 8-3 mark in 2005. "It was sloppy and our offensive execution wasn't real sharp early," said Lehigh coach Andy Coen.

"We had that interception early and a fumble in the red zone in the third quarter, so, as a coach you look at those things and you're not happy. "But then you beat a good football team 34-17 even with all of those mistakes. It shows what our kids are capable of, but we've got things to clean up." Lum was named the Dr. Edward N. Anderson Award winner as the top player in Holy Cross' Family Weekend Game.

The way he's playing, it's not the only award he's going to win. Lehigh has now won its last three games all league contests by a combined total of 110-41. Still, it could be better. "We were upset about not scoring as much as we could have today," Lum said. "We could have put up more points.

We're happy with the win, but we know we can be even better." Lum connected with sophomore Ryan Spadola eight times for 87 yards and spread his three touchdown passes to three other receivers. The biggest one may have been the shortest a 5-yarder to tight end Alex Wojdowski on the last play of the first half to make it 14-3. It capped a 13-play, 70-yard drive that chewed up the final six minutes of the second quarter and didn't feature a play that gained more than eight yards. Lum had an 8-yard run to convert on third down. "It's about reacting and instincts," Lum said.

"Sometimes we were expecting INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS RUSHING Lum 844, Barket 10-53, Campbell 10-42. Colvin 13-39. Spadola 2-11. HC: Auffant 10-46, Taggart 8-16, Fess 2-7, Mistretta 1-2, Tolzien 2-(-ll). PASSING Lum 21-33-1-212, Colvin 0-2-0-0.

I don't run the ball much, but it was there today.

It's another weapon, I guess, for our offense." On the TD pass to Wojdowski, Lum sprinted to the right, saw nothing there, and threw it back to Wojdowski in the left flat. Wojdowski made a move that would have pleased the "Dancing With The Stars" judges to elude a tackier and get into the end zone. "That was a huge play in the game," Holy Cross coach Tom Gilmore said. "If we tackle him there, the half over and it's still a 7-3 game. We had that play defended and we had a guy leave his man when he saw Lum sprint out.

We just needed to cover him there." Even after a fumble at the Crusaders 10 early in the third quarter, Lehigh extended the lead to 21-3 on Lum's 30-yard TD pass to Jake Drwal. The Crusaders (4-5, 1-2) got within 21-10, but a Zach Barket TD run and two Tom Randazza field goals put it away. Clearly, it was a day for Lehigh to feel good about itself even though it fell shy of a great performance. "A sign of a good team is to beat another good team when you're not at your best, but we've got a lot more work to do," Coen said. As for clinching at least a share of the league title, Coen said it's just a start.

"To put it in context, over a five-year period there's only one team that has won two championships and that's us," Coen said, noting Lehigh's co-championship with Lafayette in 2006. "So, we feel good about some of the things we've done here. We want to finish our business now. We just can't settle for this." LAFAYETTE FOOTBALL Leopards' hopes for tide run dashed BLOG For more on Lafayette-Colgate see www.themornlngcall.comsportstalk, 1 I A ROB KANDELTHE MORNING CALL Muhlenberg sophomore running back Terrence Dandrldge rushed for 94 yards, the first time In seven game he failed to reach 100. Punter's redemption leads to Mules' win Quilling was at his best when he hooked up with Kyle Hayes for an 18-yard gain that put the ball on the Colgate 1 and set the stage for Alan Elder's one-yard TD in the first quarter, and when he hit four different receivers on a 90-yard drive that was capped by a 19-yard touch pass to Mark Layton for a TD that drew the Leopards within 10 with 13 minutes left to play The low points were a screen pass deep in Lafayette territory that was tipped by Zach Smith and then intercepted and returned three yards for a touchdown by Lamont Sonds; an overthrown ball that was picked off by Demitri Diamond and turned into Eachus' 34-yard touchdown; a second quarter pass that sailed over the head of a wide open Hayes and the interception at the end.

The Lafayette defense played very well at times. Nick Nardone intercepted a Sullivan pass in the end zone on the game's first series; Simmons forced and Michael Schmi-dlein recovered an Eachus fumble only his second of the season in the second quarter, and Simmons had the interception in the fourth quarter But Eachus was too much. Lafayette, which has lacked a killer instinct almost all year, came up short again. "If we just made the plays that were there," Tavani said. "If nothing was there and you couldn't do anything you just throw up your hands, but the stuff was there and we're not playing the plays, which just adds to the frustration." And now, "We're just trying to play for personal pride and win one game, that's it," said Tavani, whose team is now 2-6 in the month of November since 2008.

The final two games will be at home Holy Cross and, of course, Lehigh. Retired, sports columnist Paul Reinhard is a freelance writer. COLGATE 24, LAFAYETTE 14 Lafayette 7 7-14 CataaH 17 a-24 It quarter 1 run (Rodriguez kick). 6:54. PHOTO GALLERY More photos from Saturday's game.

themornlngcall.comsports By Paul Relnhard SPECIAL TO THE MORNING CALL HAMILTON, N.Y Nate Eachus said the leadership was missing from Colgate football practices most of the week. WelL it showed up in Andy Kerr Stadium Saturday afternoon. Eachus, who is making a pretty good career for himself against Lafayette, missed most of the week of practice because of what he called "a bum shoulder" after last week's game at Lehigh. And seniors Greg Sullivan and Doug Rosnick rested ankle sprains that kept them out at Lehigh. They showed virtually no effects of injury Saturday though.

Eachus and Sullivan accounted for 415 yards of offense between them, and the Raiders defense picked off four Marc Quilling passes to throttle Lafayette's offense en route to a 24-14 Patriot League victory that dashed the Leopards' hopes of any kind of miraculous late-season run to the championship Eachus, the Hazleton High product who is now over the mark rushing this season, ran his three-year total against Lafayette to 599 yards as he gained 212 yards on 32 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns. "I don't know what it is against these guys but the holes are always pretty big. You have to give the O-line all the credit, too," Eachus said. "They Lafayette's defense were a little aggressive, and the cutback was there most of the game." The 216-pound junior, who runs like a back weighing 20 pounds more, had 155 of his yards on 19 carries in the first half, and a 34-yard touchdown run was a perfect example of his effectiveness. He broke off tackle, then bounced off a tackle attempt by Kyle Simmons and continued on to the end zona Sullivan, the Raiders quarterback whom Lafayette Coach Frank Tavani said "pulls the ball back better at the last minute than anyone I've ever seen," may not have been at his absolute best, but he did throw for 127 yards and run for another 76.

"He makes huge difference in there," Tavani added. Even in the fourth period the Leopards had a chance to make it interesting after an interception by Kyle Simmons gave them the ball at the Colgate 3L trailing by 10 with lots of time left But back-to-back 10-yard sacks were followed by a pass into triple coverage that was intercepted. Colgate then ate up more than six minutes without scoring to protect the lead and send Lafayette to its seventh loss in nine games overall The Leopards are 1-2 in the league. Quilling, who was named the starter earlier in the week after a strong showing last week, was 17-for-33 for 233 yards and one touchdown but never got into a rhythm. "Missed throws, missed reads, missed checks at the line; I Just really didn't do what I was supposed to today" Quilling said.

"When I was doing things right and we were on the right page we were moving the ball. I had ups and downs all day" happy Coach has been preaching to win these games, and no one can take it away from you. We're hoping to finish that goal." Deighan hooked up with Isiah Vaughn on a 56-yard catch-and-run to put the Mules up 7-0 after one quarter. Ursinus answered on a 1-yard Descristofaro sneak, but Deighan got the lead back on a 17-yard run around left end. Ursinus (7-2, 6-2) scored at the end of the first half when Ryan, who intercepted Descristofaro four plays earlier, took an 11-yard loss on a snap for a punt with two seconds left in the half.

The Mules blocked the field goal attempt, but Ursinus kicker Michael Bennett picked up the ball and ran it into the end zone for a touchdown. For good measure, Muhlenberg also blocked Bennett's ensuing PAT. "It's a football game," Cobb said. "Things happen. We had to keep fighting.

That's what champions do." The Mules last made the NCAAs in 2008, but fell to 3-9 last year. "I'm Just ecstatic," Connelly said. "I'm so happy for our kids. A lot of these kids were on last year's team and they took it on the chin most of the year. To see them come together as a football team and survive a lot of challenges is extremely gratifying." Fumbles-lost Penalties-yards After mishandling a snap, Muhlenberg's Ryan stopped play that extinguished any hopes Ursinus had for victory. By Tim Shocmakar SPECIAL TO THE MORNING CALL Late in the second quarter Saturday afternoon at Scotty Wood Stadium, Muhlenberg punter Kevin Ryan, filling in for an injured starter, made a mistake. He mishandled a snap on a punt a play that led Ursinus to get an extra six points.

Then with two minutes left in the fourth, with Ursinus driving, Ryan made the play of the game. He stopped Bears receiver Nick Giarratano one yard shy of a first down to extinguish any hopes Ursinus had of winning. The result? Muhlenberg defeated Ursinus 27-20 to clinch at least a tie of the Centennial Conference championship and its sixth NCAA Division ID berth since 2002. "The punter who dropped that snap, and felt terrible about it, made the biggest play of the day on that fourth down," Muhlenberg coach Mike Donnelly said. "We blew the coverage and he came down and made the play of the day" The Mules (7-2, 7-1), who finish the regular season at Moravian this week, got the plays when they needed them and controlled the line of scrimmage.

Muhlenberg Intercepted Justin Descristofaro twice and sacked him nine times. Linebacker Kenneth Cobb has four and a half of those sacks, including one on Ursinus' final drive to put the Bears in a long-yardage situation. Cobb, who more than doubled his yearly total with those sacks, was even more impressive considering he had to play without fellow lineback Patrick McDon-pugh, who could not play because of injury "I knew they did a lot of one-on-one (blocking), so if I got past him, it was me and the quarterback," Cobb said. "(The coaches) put me in that role and told me to make plays." Muhlenberg sophomore running back Terrence Dandrldge rushed for 94 yards, the first time in seven game he failed to reach 100. Quarterback Dan Deighan threw two touchdown passes and placed a key punt to the Ursinus 1 in the fourth quarter.

"This has been our goal since the beginning of the year. Since last year," Deighan said. "We're so excited and so 16 22 25-61 47-288 233 127 17-34-4 11-lM 32 59 J.33.0 0-0 11 3-22 3-31 24:31 35:29 Trneotposs Lafayette. Elder U-39. Mputu 1-33.
