SPORTS 2 SUNDAY. SEPTEMBER 26, 2010 THE MORNING CALL Lafayette comes up short again in OT The Leopards got tough defense from Ben Eaton, Mike Schmidlem, Nardone and Kyle Simmons, but Simmons also had several errors that cost the team in critical times. After letting leads slip away in the second half of its first two games, Lafayette wanted to play four full quarters on Saturday night in Princeton Stadium. It did, but even that wasn't enough. In the second overtime, after the Leop--ards' best receiver dropped an almost-sure touchdown pass that would have put the pressure on the Tigers, Princeton persevered and punched in a walk-off touchdown by Jordan Culbreath to hand the Leopards their third close defeat, 36-33. In the end, although they may have done more things well than they had in two earlier losses, this one didn't feel any better. "It was tough; we worked hard all week and still didn't get it done," said wide receiver Kyle Hayes, who caught a pair of touchdown passes one the longest of his Lafayette career (78 yards).

"We sell out and still come up short," said defensive back Nick Nardone, who was in the face of Tiger quarterback Tommy Wornham most of the night to lead a spirited defense. "We just have to make plays; we have to make plays," said offensive coordinator Mickey Fein, who saw his unit gain 421 yards on 81 plays. But the offense came up short of a first down on a third-and-three from the Princeton 9, dropped a pass on a third down at the Tiger 4 in regulation and then watched as Mark Layton dropped a Ryan O'Neil pass in the second OT. "It sure was close, but that's the way it goes; one play here and one play there," Lafayette coach Frank Tavani said. "The kids played hard, I can't fault the effort.

We had that penalty that hurt, but we also had the ball at the 10-yard line and we have to get it in from there." Placekicker Davis Rodriguez booted his second overtime field goal a 26-yarder to give the Leopards a 33-30 lead, but they left the door open. A big run by Wornham, and a late-hit penalty against Lafayette's Kyle Simmons, put Princeton in close; and on third down, Culbreath capped a 61-yard rushing night with the touchdown that enabled Princeton to even its record at 1-1. Lafayette, which had not scored a touchdown in the second half in the first two games, drove for one at the start of the third period Saturday night with Vaughn Hebron scoring to give the Leopards a 21-10 advantage. It looked like they might finally turn things around, but Wornham needed only 83 seconds to drive the Tigers for a score that put them right back into the game; And after Lafayette had to settle for a FG and an eight-point lead, Wornham again took charge for the Tigers and capped a 72-yard drive by scoring from five yards out to tie it at 24. Then it became a battle of field goals: Rodriguez from 21 yards for the Leopards and Patrick Jacob from 24 for the Tigers; then Jacob from 39 and Rodriguez from 35 in the first overtime.

Lafayette played without starting running back Jerome Rudolph but may have found a new contributor Alan Elder had 103 yards on 28 carries. He also caught five passes. O'Neil returned to the starting lineup at QB for Lafayete, and he was 24-for-36 for 283 yards and the two TDs by Hayes, who had five catches for 136 yards. 1AF PttlN 22 23 45-138 30-149 283 214 24-36-1 23-43-0 10 6 0-0 1-1 6-53 7-63 37:58 22:02 TEAM STATS First downs Rushes-yards Passing Comp-Att-lrrt Return Yards Punts-Avg. LEHIGH down 24-10. 1 really got after our guys at halftime." After Coen's lambasting, the defense allowed just seven more points six on Orlando's second TD catch but the offense was held scoreless and managed just 48 total yards after intermission. "I'm as angry right now as I've probably been in five years," Coen said. "It has nothing to do with effort, but we just have to execute better, especially in games like this." lot of time over at Lehigh and know some of the guys and the coaches." New Hampshire features another Lehigh Valley connection in offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey and he knew his offense would be challenged by Lehigh. "We saw a very good team on tape and a team that played Villanova tough defensively two weeks ago, so we knew we were in for a battle," said Cramsey the starting quarterback on Central Catholic's 1993 state title team.

"I was just happy for Joey because he has been doing a very good job for us and he had a big game for us in a loss last week to Rhode Island. You always have a third. Orlando also had a 20-yard reception in the fourth quarter for a first down that helped the No. 16 ranked Wildcats run out the clock. "Every week our offense is spread out depending on the coverages we get, but we all know we're going to get the ball at some point," Orlando said.

"If the offensive line gives R.J. time to throw, anybody in our offense can have a big day." Orlando said his performance against Lehigh rivaled his breakout effort last season against Ball State when he caught four passes for 70 yards, including a first career touchdown. "This one is special, though," he said. "I spend a Continued from SPORTS 1 watched his son more than double his 2010 pass-catching total. The redshirt sophomore, who helped Liberty make back-to-back appearances in the PIAA 4A state finals, came in with six receptions for 81 yards, but was much more active against a Lehigh defense that was burned for more than 350 yards passing for the second straight week.

UNH quarterback R. J. Toman found Orlando for a one-yard TD pass in the first quarter and again for a 14-yard scoring strike in the 3 7 0 0-10 10 14 7 0-31 Lehigh New Hampshire quarterback in place of injured Chris Lum, struggled with 10 completions in 28 attempts for 69 yards. He was intercepted three times. Lehigh needed help on their two scores.

A 42-yard Jake Peery field goal came shortly after an Alex Smith punt pinned UNH at its 2. That was followed by a subsequent three-and-out that gave the Mountain Hawks got the ball'at the Wildcats 30. Even a six-yard drive got them three points. After UNH went up 103, Lehigh rallied back again with a 40-yard drive set up by Bryan Andrews' fumble recovery Jay Campbell sliced 11 yards for a touchdown and Peery's kick made it 10-10 less than a minute into the second quarter. But New Hampshire out-scored the visitors 21-0 from there.

The key drive was an 80-yard, 12-play beauty that made it 24-10 just before halftime. "That was big for them to go up two scores before halftime," Coen said. "It was kind of frenetic out there for both teams, but we definitely should not have been little something extra for your hometown team." While some Lehigh Valley people were happy with what happened here along the New England seacoast, the team that had the long ride back to the Valley on Saturday night was anything but pleased. Just as was the case two weeks earlier with Villa-nova, Lehigh knew it would have its hands full with another of the FCS level's elite. But coach Andy Coen was disgusted with his team's offensive output The Mountain Hawks (2-2) didn't do nearly enough with three takeaways and a 76-yard kickoff return by John Kennedy "New Hampshire presented us with a lot of opportunities and offensively we weren't able to take advantage of any them, except maybe one," Coen said.
