Saturday, June 26, 1993 Hattiesburg AMERICAN OBITUARIES Lois Sanford Carr LUMBERTON Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Winstead-White Funeral Home chapel in Lumberton for Lois Sanford Carr, 72, of Lumberton, who died June 25, 1993, Methodist Hospital in Hattiesburg. The Revs. Donald O'Quin, BarHarper and Clifford Lazenby will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Olive Cemetery in Lumberton.

Pallbearers will be Steve Carr, Kevin Carr, Jeff Parish, Charlie Carr, Mike Carr and Wyatt Sanford. Mrs. Carr was a member of First Baptist Church in Lumberton. She was the retired owner of Cash Carry Grocery in Lumberton. She was an active volunteer of the Baptist Medical and a Dental Mission International.

Survivors include her husband, Edgar L. Carr of Lumberton; one daughter, Helen Parish of Hattiesburg; three sons, Dwight Carr of Mount Olive, Joe Carr of Lumberton and Larry Carr of Vicksburg; two sisters, Lillian Aurington of Seminary and sonne Davis of Lumberton; one other, Leon Sanford of Petal; grandchildren and four greatandchildren. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Lumberton or to the Baptist Medical and Dental Mission International. Visitation will be from 6 to! 9 today at Winstead-White Funeral Home in Lumberton, which is in charge of arrangements. John Rojewski Royes LAUREL Services are scheduled for 10 a.m.

today at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel for John Rojewski Royes, 83, of Center, Texas, who died June 23, 1993, in Center. Interment will in Spring Hill Cemetery in Jones County. Mr. Royes, a retired mill foreman from Republic Steel was a resident of Port Richey, until 1992. While in Florida, he was responsible for the formation of three PolishAmerican Social Clubs.

He was active in the Polish-American veterans organization by whom he was honored for his services. He was a Catholic. Survivors include his wife, Genevieve Jagodzinska Royes of Center; two sons, John Royes of Center and Robert A. Royes of Mayville, one daughter, Romaine D. Burfield of Leesburg, and four grandchildren.

She was a member of Main Street Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, M.C. "Shot" Parker. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia. Mrs. Roberts on was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia. He had lived in New Augusta since 1989. Mr. Harper was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member and deacon of Prospect Baptist Church. Mr.

Harper was preceded in death by his wife, Eather Mae Rodgers Harper; and his parents, John B. Harper and Lela Evelyn Jay Harper. Survivors include a daughter, Jannie Sue Cooper of Saudi Arabia; one sister, Leola E. Fillingame of Hickory; and five brothers, James R. Harper of Rosehill, Alonza 1 N.

Quida M. Catha PICAYUNE Services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday in sanctuary of First United Methodist Church of Picayune for Quida M. Catha, 77, of Picayune, who died June 20, 1993, at North Shore Regional Medical Center in Slidell, La. The Rev.

Tom Pace will officiate. Mrs. Catha, a Picayune native, was an accountant for Quick and Grice. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Picayune. She was preceded in death by one sister, Edith Quick.

Archie Williams SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Archie Williams, a black runner whose gold medal performance at the 1936 Olympics helped foil Hitler's hopes of using the games to showcase Aryan athletes, died June 24, 1993, after suffering a heart attack. He was 78. Williams won the 400-meter race in 46.5 seconds at the Olympics in Berlin, when teammate Jesse Owens captured much of the national spotlight. Joseph E. Liverett of Petal. CRIME Laurel police investigated eight incidents Friday, including seven traffic offenses and one aggravated assault. Highway Patrol Troop of the Mississippi Highway Patrol reported four one-car accidents caused by bad weather conditions. No injuries were reported.

Brent Brownlee LAUREL Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel for Douglas Brent Brownlee, 25, of Laurel, who died June 25, 1993, as the result of an automobile accident in Laurel. Pallbearers will be Kirk Cockrell, Dean Thomson, Dale McCraney, Nathan Brownlee, Edward Easterling and Jeff Easterling. Mr. Brownlee was a pharmacy. technician. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Memory, Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel, which is in charge of arrangements. Thomas Duane NEWTOWN, Pa. (AP) Thomas David Duane, an authority on ophthalmology who discovered why wartime pilots suffered blackouts, died June 20, 1993, of Parkinson's disease.

He was 75. Duane was the chairman of the ophthalmology department at Thomas Jefferson University from 1962 to 1981 and was ophthalmologist-in-chief at the Wills Eye Hospital from 1973 to 1981. During the Korean War, Duane investigated why pilots blacked out while dive bombing and concluded that a reduced blood supply to the retinas was the cause. Johanna Steil SEATTLE (AP) Johanna Steil, managing editor of Mademoiselle magazine in the late 1930s, died of lung cancer June 19, 1993. She was 85.

Steil began her career in the mid-1920s as a receptionist and manuscript reader for McCall's magazine. She eventually worked her way up to managing editor of Mademoiselle magazine in the late 1930s. ZORTMAN Chad and Maria Zortman announce the birth of an 8-pound, 2-ounce daughter, Natalie Alexis, on June 17, 1993. Grandparents are W.C. and Carolyn Zortman of Montgomery, and Bob Hamill of Collins.

DOUGHTERY Mr. and Mrs. George Justin' Doughtery of Petal announce the birth of a 7-pound, son, Christopher O'Neal, on June 9, 1993. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs.

Grady Essary and the late Grady Essary of Brooklyn. Hattiesburg There were 10 accidents reported in the Hattiesburg area Friday afternoon, Hattiesburg police Lt. Charlie Sims said. Two of the accidents were due solely to the weather. On U.S.

98 East and Elks Lake road, a vehicle hydroplaned, spun around and crashed: into another vehicle, Sims said. In another accident, on U.S. 49 and U.S. 98 a car had pulled off the road because of the weather. When they tried to get back on the road, they lost control of the car and hit another vehicle.

Seven of the other eight accidents reported involved a car crashing into the back of another vehicle. Sims said those accidents may have been due to cars stopping suddenly on wet pavement and skidding into other cars. Willie Smith, 32, faces charges of grand larceny and carrying a concealed weapon after a felony conviction. By Deirdre McGruder.
