Scouts checked out giant popcorn ball last week. photo by rim Bath) Zachary shows he knows lots about leagues Young Barnes gives his dad a hand in writing column Barnes family is 'between Dad needed a week off from the Kokomo-Center Schools "Neighbors" column, so as he has done in the past on special occasions, he asked me Zachary Thomas Barnes to write this week's column.

Of course, Dad's helping me write this column because I'm only 11. Even though my column concerns some Kokomo-Center students, the focus is on our family so Dad is helping me on his own time. Our family is "between seasons." This past weekend is the only one between mid-August and mid- December with NO games. Soccer is over and basketball and baseball (my brother and I play for UCT Replay) kick in next week. We just completed the youth basketball leagues' drafts at Carver Center.

My dad hates the draft. The leagues are very competitive at Carver. Two boys who played for him the past four winters went as early picks to other teams. It really hurt my dad. Whenever it is time to change age levels, this happens.

Another boy who played the past two winters with our team was the No. 1 draft pick in our new age group. I guess the other coaches know our players have sound fundamentals. Since he's my dad and he helps coach, I don't have to go through tryouts. I'm so glad I don't because my friends talk about how much pressure they have on them with all those coaches taking notes.

I wish no one had to try out, but my dad says it's the fairest way to select players that he knows. I can see how it hurts him when he loses those players. Those boys are like sons to him. I know how he feels. Those players are like brothers to me.

It hurt when Dad told me we weren't able to draft them for our team. Those players will always be like sons to my dad even when he forgets their names. Dad gets worse about remembering names the closer he gets to 50. Dad never forgets the just the name. My mom, Mary, is always teasing Dad after one of his former ZACHARY BARNES KOKOMO-CENTER COLUMNIST track or basketball athletes stop him at a ballgame.

Dad and the athlete will reminisce (that's Dad's big word) about a particularly eventful race or game complete with finish and time or opponent and score but he can't remember that former player's name. Dad even does it to me sometimes, but so far, it's only mistaken identity among us four Barnes brothers. Grandma, my dad's mom, says cousins are next. After the draft, Dad shared his hopes that the youth coaches in town whether at Carver, YMCA, PAL, the schools or the churches understand the responsibility. Dad believes coaching young people is a huge responsibility.

Dad explained that responsibility to me by saying that parents entrust their "competitive babies" to the youth coaches. One of my dad's goals is that the youngsters who play for him will go to the next level of competition still loving the game. But most of all, Dad wants all the coaches to make sure they are coaching all the boys and girls, and not just their sons and daughters and the all-stars. I had better close because I have homework a book report and it's Sunday evening. I procrastinate like my dad, but not as bad. Before I go, Dad says I should invite everyone to come watch the community's youth play basketball at Carver.

We have 35 youth teams in three coed age groups 7 to 8,9 to 10 and 11 to 12 and starting the first week of December, we play Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. So, please come see us play. Goodnight.
