Opal was born Feb. 10, 1926, in Cedar City, Mo. She was Opal Frances Gowin a 52-year resident of Salinas and was a homemaker. Opal enjoyed babysitting kids. Survivors: Husband, Richard M.

SUN CITY, ARIZONA Howard Otto Grantham Howard Otto Grantham, 94, of Sun Howard Otto Grantham City, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, of natural causes at Woodmark Assisted Living in Sun City.

Howard was born Sept. 29, 1910, in Cherryville, Kansas. Howard grew up in Springfield, on a homestead outside of town. He moved to California in 1938, and in 1941, he moved to Salinas and worked for Spreckels Sugar Co. until he retired in 1972.

Howard and his wife then moved to Arizona. Survivors: Wife of 66 years, Helen Spark Grantham; three children, Alice Grantham, Dorwin Grantham, Lela Grantham; 14 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren. Visitation: 1 to 5 p.m. today and Sunday at the Healey Mortuary. Graveside service: 10 a.m.

Monday, Feb. 28, at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Salinas. Burial: at the cemetery following the services. Memorials: Contributions may be made in his honor to the Heart Fund. Arrangements: Healey Mortuary, 405 North Sanborn Road, Salinas.

WE REMEMBER Raymond Herrera Aug. 31, 1927 to Feb. 27, 2003 Grandpa, It just seems like yesterday that we had to say goodbye. For the years really do just fly by. There is not a day that goes by that a memory of you doesn't run through our head.

We will never forget every- Marcus Asie Williams Marcus Asie Williams, 86, passed away Wednesday, 23, 2005, in Merced. He was born on March 17, 1918, in Long Beach. Mr. Williams' family moved MERCED Marcus Asie Williams north and settled in Westwood. After graduating from Westwood High School, he worked for the Red River Lumber Company for six years.

He was drafted in 1941 to serve in the U.S. Army. He spent four years in the South Pacific, where he was a chaplain's assistant. After the service, he graduated from College of the Pacific in Stockton. He was a principal for 29 years with the Salinas Elementary School District.

After his retirement, he became a certified hypnotherapist. He started the business Hypnosis for Educational Improvement. He also worked for the Monterey County Library. He traveled throughout the county training volunteers as literacy tutors. He was a volunteer with Salinas Valley Hospice for several years.

Mr. Williams was the past president of the Monterey County Retired Teachers Association. He was a member of the Bear Creek Community Church. He was preceded in death by his daughter Marci Williams. Survivors: Wife, Tommie Jean Williams of Merced; son, David F.

Williams of Zionsville, Pa; stepsons, Rick Silva and Mark Silva, both of Merced; 10 grandchildren and two-great grandchildren. Graveside services: 11 a.m. today at Evergreen Memorial Park. Arrangements: Under the direction of Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Chapel. AURORA Nate Cornell Nate Cornell, 82, of Aurora, died Friday, Feb.

18, 2005, at his home. He was born Aug. 21, 1922, in Chickasha, Okla. to Benjamin Thomas and Nannie (Slidham) Cornell. Nate married Ethel Short on July 30, 1947, in Oklahoma City, Okla.

He was a retired truck driver for Nunes Brothers trucking in Salinas. He has lived in Aurora since 1984. He was a WWII Army Veteran. Nate was preceded in death by his son, Ricky. Survivors: wife, Ethel; son, Terry of Cassville, Mo; daughter, Janet Rose of Monett, Mo; two grandsons, one granddaughter and two stepgrandaughters.
