"Our best information on these traction aids comes out of the findings of the National Safety Council's Committee on Winter Driving Hazards, based on its 1967 test program at Stevens Point, Wisconsin." The Chief said the tests show that studded snow tires give a car significantly better traction on icy pavements than regular snow tires, but reinforced tire chains provide a lot more traction than either.

"The National Safety Council committee found that putting new studded tires on the rear wheels reduced braking distances on ice by 19 per cent, and that after 2,500 miles of wear this improvement drops to 13 per cent," the chief said. "When you put studded tires on all four wheels the braking distance is reduced by 31 per cent when they are new, and when they are used this drops to 17 per cent." He pointed out that new' reinforced tire chains on the rear wheels reduce braking distance on ice by 50 per cent. The chief recommended that every New York, which showed many familiar camp sites, thus helping us to relive past en- joyable experiences and anticipate a new season of camping and hiking. Ken and Evalyn Studded Tested By Council A new and safer way to go on ice and snow is use of the new metal-studded tires which are coming into wider acceptance in snow-belt states, according to Acting Chief Robert Connors of the Springville police department But he says on slick, winter surfaces or in heavy snow the old reliable reinforced tire chains provide considerably more traction.

"We are getting a lot of in car owner should always carry tire chains in the trunk for use in weather emergencies because of the superior traction they provide. He said an important finding of the 1967 tests was that conventional snow tires (without studs) offer the motorist no advantage over regular tires in stopping on ice and are actually slightly inferior to regular tires. One reason for this, the chief said, is that regular tires have shown steady and substantial improvement over the years. Their stopping distance on ice has dropped from an average of 195 feet ten years ago to only 149 feet in 1967. Snow tires have also improved, but not enough to offset the outstanding improvement in regular tires.

"From the standpoint of traction on glare ice, studded snow tires develop about three times the pulling ability of regular tires," the chief said. "Reinforced tire chains provide more than seven times the pulling ability of regular tires." "Start stopping sooner on snow and ice, Chief Connors concluded.
