SHE IS PROUD OF MOVEMENT Mrs. Crews Received Her Education In This County; She Was "Mag-gic" Thompson. "Gee! how I wish I were going vntlv you.v It makes me so home- when I think of you going back said Mrs. Margaret Crewi of Tieton, to her nephew just before he left recently for a visit with relatives in Livingston County, Missouri.

Mrs. Crews is the mother of the great 4-H Club movement for boys and girls in the United States which now has an active membership of over 1,200,000. California is the latest state to acclaim her as the mother of the 4-H Club, which is hailed by educators everywhere as a great constructive movement. She is "Livingston County's own" Maggie Thompson. "Well, you see, we were very much of a pioneer community here," Mrs.

Crews said at her home in Tieton when asked how she happened to form the original 4-H Club. "After the water and the people came and we had formed the Tieton Mothers Club, I enjoyed the companionship of others so much that I began to wonder about the boys. If you don't give a boy something to he'll find something. So I up to my 'sanctum' and thought the thing out. Since were a farming community it needs must deal with farming.

Since each individual must build his life with what he head, hands health and heart I chose the 4-H's. Must Have Clean Heart "I told the boys that God has given us an intellect, which he expects us to iiiO, hands with which to perform the direction of the intellect. If they were to perform this labor they niust have health; clean bodies, clean minds, clean hearts. PURE BRED HOME GROWN BEEFSTEAK bian i-noco The buffalo which formerly roamed Missouri's plains and blocked the progress of prairie schooners for half a day at a time have been replaced by the horns and hoofs shown above. The truculent fellow on the left is W. H. R. Star Domino, herd sire. There are about seventy Herefords in Dr.

Brennans herd. Crews was asked. With a hearty laugh, she replied, "Land, No! In fact, I couldn't believe it would be accepted all over the United States after the passage of the Smith-Lever Act in 1914 made funds available. My 'Brainchild' sure has grown!" "But you are proud of your 'brain Makes Belter Citizens "Proud of it! Why shouldn't I be? Everytime a boy or girl takes that 4-H pledge: 'I pledge my head to clearer thinking, I pledge my heart to greater loyalty, I pledge my hands to larger pledge my health to better living 1 for my club, my community and my or she becomes a better citizen; and that is what we Also that all these three things were only small things compared to the clean heart, for out of the heart are the issues of life. "When those eighteen boys met in your home on March 1, 1912, and organized this club, did you expect it to become national in scope?" Mrs.

ONE FARMER TELLS ANOTHER save on everything I buy at Temple Stephens And you can put it down as a fact that whether you want beans or bridles, cookies or crocks, ham or halters, you can do better here. Our store was conceived to give the most satisfaction to the most people. And, after all, that was the theory and the practice of the pioneer merchant and we still like it. Its a grand thing to celebrate the 100th birthday of a community, and its a grand thing to recall the admonitations, the practices and the teachings of our pioneer forefathers. They were the the the safe kind of folks ana you will always find the Temple Stephens Stores doing their dead level best to give you the same kind of practical and satisfactory service.

'Follow the Gleam from the mountain you see my 'sanctum' was a mountain too overlooking two beautiful valleys and a distant view of the snow'cap- ped mountains." Mrs. Crews, then "Maggie" Thompson, was born sixty-seven years ago in Pickaway County, Ohio, about eighteen miles from Columbus.

When she was twelve years old she came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Thompson, and seven brothers and sisters to Livingston County, settling near Chillicothe in what seemed to them the wild and woolly west. Was Educated Here She received her elementary education at the Willard, Oak Grove and Jacksnipe schools and later attended the Chillicothe high school and the old Chillicothe Normal She taught school in both Livingston and Grundy counties and it was while teaching at Phillips school in Medicine township that she met and married Wesley Crews. They resided for a time on what is known as the "Sub" Thome farm in that township.

Later they purchased a farm at Indian Trail Ford, about four miles southwest of Farmersville. Their three sons were born here. The farmily moved to Washington in September, 1902, and homesteaded a ranch near what is now Tieton. Mrs. Crews and two of her sons moved only this spring from the homestead to a smaller ranch.

For all of the years she may have resided in the "real west" she has riot forgotten the old friends "back she says, and would 1 like to make a visit to Chillicothe and Livingston County soon. Perry Wells, who was educated in the schools of Chillicothe, was General Manager of the Northwestern territory of the International Harvester Co. when he passed away in Chicago, 1923. He had been identified with this company for over twenty-five years at the time of his death. He was married to Miss Bertha Pinkley, of this city.

FINE HEREFORDS HOBBYJF DOCTOR Herd of 70 Cattle of Royal Lineage Grace Farm of Dr. R. J. Brennan Northeast of City. "Bulls for their own sake and cows for the beefsteak they'll raise," seems to be the motto followed by Dr.

R. J. Brenuan in building the Brennan beef herd of. pure-bred Herefords. Dr.

Brennan has the bulk of his herd on his farm three miles north- oast of ChUlicothe, His fine herd sire, W. H. R. Star Homino, ana sixty head of cattle graze and chew their cuds and increase their blocky proportions to the delight of any Hereford admirer that watches them. The desire of Hereford fanciers when they build their herds is to find cows and a herd sire which possess a pleasing combination of individual excellence and most popular blood lines.

Dr. Brennan has the "bug," and in many auction sales during the past four years he has been a con- sistant bidder and determined owner of many high priced and good quality herd matrons and herd sires of the country. Herd Sire From Wyoming- W. H. R.

Star Domino was purchased from the Wyoming Hereford Ranch, whose bull calves last year averaged close to $1,000 with a top of $3,500 for a calf one year old. The herd sire shown in the accompanying pictures is of the type and breeding that commands these prices. The best cow in the herd, Dais- set 31st, shown also in the accompanying pictures, was bred by Will E. Smith of Columbia. She is sired by Prince Domino 7th, who was sold to a Colorado breeder for $15,000.

Daissett 31st? is a producer of good bulls and heifers, and though she is now nine years old, she drops a calf every ten months that is the right type to build good herds from. The other female members of the herd carry the rich blood of Prince Domino and Beau Mischief and were bred mainly by Mousel Bros, of Cambridge, Nebraska, J'. D. Corley of Colorado Springs, Colorado, of Trenion, Carte of West Plains, Gordon and Hamilton of Kansas and Shawhan of Lees Summit. Herd Now Numbers 70 The Brennan herd now numbers about seventy head and has the quality and breeding desired in show catle.

Dr. Brennan is emphatic about the future of cattle in Livingston County. "Much of our land is rolling and if used for cropping will wash away under our feet while we watch it," he said in discussing the cattle industry. "The best hope for saving such land is to put it in grass and graze cattle on it. Good cattle do not bring a high return per acre like a bumper crop of corn, but the return is steady and sure.

"We have the grazing lands and the other factors necessary to produce fine cattle. We have a.few fine herds in the county. As the need and desire for fine grazers grow, the cattle industry will become more and more important in the history of Livingston."
