THE MORNING CALL, TUESDAY, MARCH 13, 2001 A7 Dems could be leaving Shuster opponent on his own WASHINGTON Matinnal and Ponn. Commission, will face GOP nominee Bill Shuster, the former congressman's son, in the May 15 special election in the south central Pennsylvania district. "We don't discuss specifics about whether or how much we will help," said Erik Smith, a spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which recruits candidates and helps them raise money. That is not always the committee's practice. In several congressional races in Pennsylvania last year, including contests in Allen- town, suburban Philadelphia and suburban Pittsburgh, the committee talked openly about donating money and services to candidates.

By contrast, the national Republican Party has said it is very confident about retaining the seat and has promised Shuster help if he needs it. The 9th District includes all of Bedford, Blair, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin and Snyder counties and parts of Centre, Clearfield and Perry counties. 1 null J. Bud Shuster. The 9th District that Shuster represented from 1973 until resigning last month is heavily Republican. The Democrats are focusing on races next year that they believe they have a better chance of winning, party officials said. DAN LOH Associated Press INDIANA (AP) An anonymous letter prompted Indiana County authorities to renew an investigation into the 1987 disappearance of a 15-year-old girl, but they have had little luck finding her. Police said their investigation into Alicia Markovich's disappearance on April 27, 1987, had stalled until her father, John Markovich, told them in October he had received a letter that purported to be a confession sent from Bedford, N.H. Based on information in the letter, police and a dog trained to find bodies searched a portion of the Conemaugh River bank out side Blairsville in recent months.

They found nothing. Police also went to Bedford, N.H., and questioned a person whose name appeared on the letter. Authorities said the individual had never heard of the girl or her family and didn't know where Blairsville was. Markovich told police he had last seen Alicia walking away from his Blairsville home after the two argued about her mother seeking more money for child support. As she left, police said, Markovich told her to be home by 8 p.m.

He called police when she hadn't come back the following day. i gill I I i'j i'-attjr'ii: ftwwr 7 linn 111 SELL RENT THE with mornwg classifieds (JAJLL bes ways relax to is to keep your money busy 49-Month CDCD IRA 33-Month CDCD IRA For a limited time, First Union is now offering these two outstanding certificate-of-deposit interest rates.
