AMSTERDAM (AP) Authorities diverted traffic Saturday from at least 70 local residents protesting state plans for a detour around the site of the collapsed New York State Thruway bridge near Amsterdam. An estimated 150 residents blocked traffic on Route 5S near the collapse for about an hour and a half Saturday afternoon, according to Nancy Dufel, one of the protesters. state police Sgt. Mrs. Dufel said the closure would hurt local businesses. Some Montgomery County residents have also complained the bypass would leave no direct traffic route between Auriesville and Fort Hunter. Mrs. Dufel said protesters dispersed because they felt they had made their point.

"I know we're not going to back down," she said, vowing that protesters would be lobbying elected representatives. Mrs. Dufel's husband, Ed Dufel, is co-owner of a nearby farm stand and son of Walter Dufel, who has waged an unsuccessful legal battle against the state's use of his land for the detour. Dufel was angry because the state seized 25 acres of family property to build a temporary bypass around the collapse. He suffered a setback Friday when U.S.
