Myricks, the last jumper to Lewis Doohan ousts defending champion at Wimbledon WIMBLEDON, England (AP) Australian Peter Doohan halted Boris Becker's bid for history Friday by ousting the two-time defending champion 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in a second-round shocker that ranked among the most significant upsets Wimbledon has seen. "It was like magic, the way he guessed right," the stunned Becker said. "He just couldn't miss." It was the first time the top-seeded West German had faced match point at Wimbledon, his only defeat coming when he was forced to retire with an injury in 1984. Since then, the 19-year-old redhead had ridden his booming serve and acrobatic tumbles at the net to two consecutive Wimbledon titles. He was trying to become only the third man in the modern era to win three consecutive crowns in the Grand Slam event and the first to do it before he turned 20.

Instead, it was Doohan, winless in four previous Wimbledon appearances until this year, who controlled the match and, eventually, the crowd. It was the first time since Charlie Pasarell defeated Manuel Santana in the first round that the defending Wimbledon men's champion had left the All England Club a loser so early. "Every time he would guess where I was going to put the ball he would be right," Becker said of his 70th ranked opponent who lives in Little Rock, Ark. and played for four years at the University of Arkansas. "Then he was guessing lob and I hit a lob.
