GREENWOOD Dems challenge consent decree A state lawmaker and a Leflore County supervisor are challenging a consent decree reached in the Mississippi Republican Party's lawsuit over voting during the 2008 November election. The decree signed by Circuit Judge Jannie M. Lewis in April requires the county to comply with state election laws related to voter assistance, unauthorized loitering at precincts, poll watcher rights and ballot security. The Greenwood Commonwealth reports that Sen.

David Jordan and Supervisor Robert Moore filed a motion Tuesday alleging the decree changes state election laws by giving some law enforcement the duties of the election bailiff and creates a new law by banning the use of cell phones at polls. The Democrats are asking Lewis to address their concerns before the Nov. 2 election. MERIDIAN JimmieRodgers receives marker The "Father of Country Music" will be the first artist named to the Mississippi Country Music Trail. Jimmie Rodgers will be honored June 1 with the placing of a marker at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Meridian.

Rodgers, known as the "Father of Country Music," recorded more than 120 songs. Bom in Meridian on Sept 8, 1897, Rodgers was also known as the "Singing Brake-man" for his work on the railroad. He made his first recording in 1927. Rodgers died of tuberculosis at the age of 3 5 on May 26, 1933 in New York City. He was the first performer elected to Nashville's Country Music Hall of Fame in 1961.

The Associated Press GULFP0RT Woman accused of smuggling money A federal court document shows a woman accused of smuggling cash claims she didn't know her truck had a hidden compartment or that it contained just over $140,000. The Sun Herald reports 39-year-old Esbeydi Borja-Borja of Mexico has been in custody since her arrest in a traffic stop on Interstate 10. A Harrison County deputy stopped her pickup on May 19, claiming her license plate was obscured. Officials say a search of the pickup turned up 14 bundles of cash wrapped with duct tape. The federal government alleges she was trying to smuggle money out of the country with the intent to evade a currency-reporting requirement Borja-Borja appeared at a detention hearing Tuesday.

U.S. Magistrate Judge John M. Roper ordered her held with no bond. BILOXI City's longevity pay reduced Biloxi City Council has cut longevity pay from $15 to $10 per month served for all employees but voted against other reductions in benefits. Longevity pay was capped at 20 years.

Council President Bill Stallworth tells The Sun Herald that those who have worked for the city for more than 20 years are frozen at the current rate. Stallworth said Tuesday these changes will control the cost of the program and are less painful to the employees he talked to than other proposals to save money by reducing pay or benefits. The council left in place the 100 percent tuition reimbursement for city employees who earn a grade or better while attending college or taking online classes.
