ANSWERS TO 01 As South, vulnerable, you hold: 1065 9 0952 J6 763 The bidding has proceeded: NORTH EAST SOUTH WEST 14 10 What do you bid now? A If you play negative doubles, this is the time to trot out your favorite weapon it is for holdings like this that the convention was designed. If not, you must overcall one heart despite the fact that it is your weaker major. To overcall one spade runs the risk of losing a possible 4-4 heart fit.

Q2 Both vulnerable, as South you hold: 497 98 034 AK0108752 What is your opening bid? A If you play gambling three-notrump opening bids, you have the perfect hand for that gadget a long, solid minor suit and no outside tricks. If not, we would pre-empt to the maximum. Our choice is five clubs, regardless of vulnerability. Q3 As South, vulnerable, you hold: 41076 9 AQ6 0 AQ107 AK9 The bidding has proceeded: SOUTH WEST NORTH EAST 10 Pass 19 Pass What do you bid now? spade a jump to two no trump would have been a no-brainer. Now you have to choose between two no trump, four hearts or three clubs.

We hate to jump to game in a major with a flat hand and only three-card support or jump shift with that type of hand. We opt for two no trump, the least of evils. Q4 Both vulnerable, as South you hold: 48 9 10873 KJ4 AK063 A Life would have been far simpler had partner responded one BRIDGE QUIZ The bidding has proceeded: SOUTH WEST NORTH EAST 14 Pass 10 Pass What do you bid now? A Don't let the host of high cards in the minor suits deflect you from your duty. If you don't introduce your major-suit now, despite its flimsy quality, you will never convince partner you have four cards in the suit. So spurn a club rebid or a diamond raise in favor of a bid of one heart.

05. Both vulnerable, as South you hold: 9A 0A54 AK652 The bidding has proceeded: SOUTH WEST NORTH EAST 14 Pass Pass 14 What action do you take? A Your second suit has been picked off and there is nothing to suggest that you have any playable contract. On the contrary, it seems that your best chance for a plus score is to defeat the opponents. Pass, and await further developments. Q6 As South, vulnerable, you hold: A Void 9 AK62 AQ762 A 1032 The bidding has proceeded: EAST SOUTH WEST NORTH 14 Dbl 24 30 Pass What do you bid now? A The fact that partner entered the auction freely places him with some values, so slam is a distinct possibility.

The way to get this information to partner the lowest possible level is to start with a cue-bid of three spades right now.
