Heavy seas hampered the hunt. A Royal Air Force crew reported 30-foot waves. It had hoped to drop a radio and emergency food pack to Manry.

He was believed to be 100 miles or more off the Cornish resort of Falmouth where his 13-year-old daughter, Robin, and 11-year-old son, Douglas, were wailing. Manry's wife, Virginia, 46, took part in the search Friday. She was taken by an official of her husband's newspaper, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, on a trawler which left Falmouth early Thursday.
