4D Star-Gaette Sunday Telegram. Aug. 18, 1985 receivers in the Twin Tiers in recent years and the Blue Raiders offense, which perennially lags behind the rest of the Southern Trails Conference Division could use such a shot in arm. Buffalo before the season ended so family and friends could watcb him work again but no such luck. Louisville is the next-closest city in the minors' most widespread league.

Sunday Brunch Ed Weaver Penn State coach Joe Paterno would like to see a return of freshman (or JV) football among NCAA Division I schools. "As it is now," Paterno says, "we have too many kids who don't play enough football. If we had freshmen football, it would let me take a better look at a lot more kids while giving them a chance to play more football." itiMiiK wmUM The rumor mill has Elmira College basketball coach and math instructor Paul Manlkowski also going to Horseheads but that he'll remain EC mentor. baseball coach Jim Keenan calls Union-Endicott junior Fran Boreffl "the finest (high school) hitter in New York state. Other coaches from the Empire State Tournament echoed those words and the star infielder is expected to be a high-round amateur draft choice in 1986.

College will upgrade its baseball program to Division I in 1986 and Coach Ivan George has picked two Sullivan Trail Conference stars to be a part of the big move Southside pitcher Rick Lincoln and Horseheads first baseman-outfielder Jeff Klrkwood. Wright, EC soccer coach and Elmira Pioneers mascot, was an assistant coachplayer for the Central Region men's open soccer team at the recent Empire State Games. As of this writing, Pete Rose needs 20 hits in 11 games to hit his prediction of Aug. 26 as the day he'll snap Ty Cobb's all-time record for career hits. Assuming that he'll play every day and get four official at-bats per game, Rose would have to go 20-for-45, a .444 average.

That's not impossible for him but it will be awfully tough. Chances are Pete will miss the mark by 2-4 days. Mike D'AIoIsIo'i successful tenure as Notre Dame High School varsity football coach will most likely end after the 138S season. The popular ND boss has taken a junior high math teaching position in the Horseheads School District. Since the appointment was so late, though, each school will allow him to stay on as ND coach for one final season.

"Mike will be coaching for us at least one more year," said ND athletic director Mike Johnston. "He's the best prepared and he's ready to go, knowing the program and the players. Mike has been very good for Notre Dame and was an outstanding coach," Johnston added. "He did an outstanding job with our football team and was a great help to me in our basketball program (as junior vasity coach)." "It's going to be a very difficult job to find a replacement for him," Johnston said. "And it's up in the air right now whether or not he will coach basketball at ND (in 1985-86 season)." Look for D'Aloisio to hook on as a Horseheads assistant for 1986.

He's been (along with Johnston's help) the best producer of wide Pro baseball umpire Tom Owen of Horseheads has been transferred from the Class AAA International League to the Class AAA American Association, which amounted to a big break for him in his quest to reach the Major Leagues. Owen, who began the season in the Class AA Southern League, was subbing in the IL but has his own position in the American Association. "He was really excited," said Owen's father Paul. "Now he has a good shot to go up (to the majors) in a couple years." Owen had hoped to be working some American Asso. games in I'm all for a general manager (or field manager for that matter) knocking his playersteam when he thinks they deserve it.

But Chicago Cubs' GM Dallas Green went a bit too far last week in his tirade of his injury-decimated team. Green blasted the team in general and Ron Cey and Jody Davis in particular for their "lack of production" and the team's "dull play." At no time did Green mention that the Cubs are the most injury-plagued team in baseball this season and his failure to do so is a disservice to Cubs players and fans as well. Owen continues to hurl well An men's Division start against the team she'd earlier beaten for her first loss. And during Rice's five-game losing streak, the team's fielding was atrocious. "I asked myself a couple of questions," she said, "like, 'what am I doing But I think the team had to make an adjustment (to me), too.

And the fielding has really improved, a great deal." Not coincidentally, Rice's began to win when Owen asserted herself as the team's top winning five of seven games to rise from a tie for last place to third place in the five-team league. She's pitched a four-hitter and two six-hitters and twice she's allowed only two earned runs in a game. Since her first two outings, she's averaged less than three walks per game. "I never thought I was the No. 1 pitcher," Owen said.

"He (Coach Jim Rice) just said I was on a streak, so I began pitching most of the games." Owen says she throws a fastball, a changeup and a dropball, which, when thrown properly, drops down as it crosses the plate. "And I'm working on a riser," she added, "which is suppose to rise just in front of the plate a little." Owen, whose sparkling 1.03 earned run average during her freshmen season at Stetson was fourth among NCAA Division I pitchers, doesn't consider herself a pioneer for women who wish to play in the City League. "No, nothing like that," she said. "I just wanted some place to pitch this summer." Monday night (6 p.m.) at Eldridge Stadium, Owen will take the ball in Rice's Division playoffs opener against regular-season champion Gush's, the only league team she hasn't beaten. Fares per Person from 165 Special Childrens Fare 159 By ED WEAVER S-G Sports Writer Erin Owen joined the Elmira City Men's Softball League just to keep her arm in shape this summer. The former Horseheads High School and current Stetson University star wasn't sure that she'd be successful in her experiment, but she's developed into one of the City League Division's top pitchers. The three-time All-Sullivan Trail Conference pick posted a 6-2 record for a Rice's team that finished 7-9 overall. "I really thought I'd be out there pitching and ducking," Owen said last week as she prepared for the City League playoffs.

Hank Margiet, a longtime City League star hurler, had coached Owen in a the Horseheads Cinderella Softball League's pitching school. He suggested that Owen give the City League a try, since there is no women's fastpitch Softball in the area. For many, reaction to Owen's entry into the league was one of disbelief. "A lot of people were hesitant, including teammates," she said. "I could see the uncertainty.

And I could see that some (opposing) players were against it." But Owen said she incurred no real harrassment. "No, not really," she said. "Most people go out of their way to encourage me or to compliment me, especially my teammates. "They harrass each other," Owen said of her opponents. "If I strike them out or pop them up, they kinda harrass their teammates." Owen said she tried to pay no attention to the comments of fans but during her first two games she heard some, "put the girl in, put the girl in." Some opposing players made the same comments.

Her main problem was nervousness. "I felt very awkward and I could tell everybody else did, too. You could feel it. "I wasn't too worried," she added. "I knew they'd hit me hard but I just tried to do my best." Owen listed two major adjustments she faced when joining the league. "The distance is six feet farther, 46 feet instead of 40," she said.

"The first couple games, I was forcing the ball to get to the plate. And I was still pitching in women's tournaments and once you start pitching from 46 feet, it's hard to go back to 40, and then back to 46 again." The other major adjustment, of course, was pitching to men instead of women. "They're a lot stronger," Owen said, "and they don't all have a weaknesses like most girls do. Girls, you can pitch outside (corner) or inside and get them, but you always have to think when you're pitching to a guy. They really hop on the pitches.

When they hit it, they hit it. "And it's a lot different pitching to someone who's 6-4, 220 pounds, compared to the usual 5-4," she added.
