NEW ORLEANS (AP) After spotting Tulane five first-quarter points, Clemson came alive on a 5-yard plunge by tailback Cliff Austin and two fourth-quarter field goals by Bob Paulling to down the Green Wave 13-5 in a college football game Saturday night. Both teams blew numerous scoring opportunities. Tulane went out front on a 46-yard field goal by Vince Manalla nine minutes into the game and added two more points on a safety with 4:47 left in the first quarter. The safety came when a high snap from center sailed over the heat of Clemson punter Dale Hatcher into the end zone.

Hatcher chased the ball down and fell on it, accepting the safety. The Tigers went ahead for good with 8:22 when Austin plunged over from five yards out, capping a five-play, 25-yard drive following recovery of a Tulane fumble. The Tigers moved the ball up and down the the remainder of the game but twice had to settle for fi Id goals instead of what appeared to be certain touchdowns. Clemson marched from Its own 33-yard line to the Tulane five late in the third quarter, but had to settle for a 31-yard field goal by Paulling. Two plays later Clemson defensive back Tim Childers picked off a Tulane pass and Clemson was in business at the Green Wave 25.

Four plays later, Pauling kicked a 37-yard field goal. Tulane was its own worst enemy for most of the game, turning the ball over to Clemson on fumbles and interceptions eight times. Clemson was led offensively by quarterback Homer Jordan, who hit seven of 15 passes for 114 yards and also ran the ball 12 times for 46 more yards. Austin got 60 yards on 17 carries. Tulane sophomore quarterback Wade Elmore, who passed for over 200 yards in his first varsity action last week, hit only 10 of 21 passes for 96 yards against Clemson Saturday.

Essington completed 16 of 23 passes for 345 yards to establish a school record for passing yardage in a game.

Twice in the first half, the mercurial Stanley sped behind the Texas Tech defense to haul in TD passes of 87 and 74 yards. Essington subsequently hit split end Ricky Ward on a 35-yard pass play, and Stanley then broke off his long punt return. Virginia Tech 28, Richmond 12 BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -Virginia Tech's Cyrus Lawrence scored two touchdowns and ran for 169 yards to lead the Hokies to a 28-12 win over the University of Richmond Saturday. Lawrence, a junior running back from Franklin, scored on runs of one and six yards while carrying the ball 36 times to overshadow a tremendous effort by Richmond's Barry Redden.

Redden gained 223 yards on 32 carries, but it wasn't enough as Richmond lost its second straight game of the season. Tech was the first to get on the board when, with 3:27 left in the first half, Steve Casey threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Mike Shaw. Richmond quickly countered as quarterback Steve Kralnock threw a 31-yard scoring pass to Rich Scherer with less than 2:00 remaining in the half, Arkansas 14, Tulsa 10 FAYETTE VILLE, Ark. (AP) -Left-footed Bruce Lahay booted a 46-yard field goal with 5:51 left in the fourth quarter to put Arkansas ahead for the first time on their way to a 14-10 non-conference victory over Tulsa. Lahay, whose lackluster punting kept Arkansas in a hole much of the day, added a 21-yard field goal moments later when Tulsa's fourth-down fake punt failed at its own 11.

Jason Staurovsky's 42-yard field goal in the third quarter gave Tulsa a 10-0 lead. Arkansas got back in the game when running back Thomas Brown wobbled a pass to wide receiver Derek Holloway who spun away from one defender and turned the play into a 41-yard touchdown with 1:14 left in the third period.
