FIRST THE MORNING CALL, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2001 C5 Leopards follow custOLnni pull away, 49-2 'III Colgate tried to fight back and drove to the Lehigh 19 with under six minutes left, but its fourth turnover of the game and third of the second half pretty much sealed the Raiders' fate. Lehigh lineman Tyler Hart's first career interception, off the hands of Moss, sent many in the crowd of 6,222 to the exits. "The defense had its ups and downs, but in the end, we did what we needed to do and got those turnovers," Hart said. "Whenever we needed a big play, we got it." The crowd that left early missed a late Colgate score, but the the Raiders' onsides kick with 1:28 left was corralled fittingly by Snyder. "There's only a handful of seniors left who were here two years ago when we lost, and I know for me it was the worst feeling in the world," Snyder said.

"That's why this is so sweet. It wasn't the prettiest of wins. But it doesn't matter." Lehigh 25, Colgate 22 4 1 'J' I LEHIGH Continued from Page CI They were career-best yardage totals for both players. Six of the completions came on back-to-back third quarter scoring drives after a frustrating first half. "It's like Luke and I got into a quarterback-receiver type of zone for awhile," Snyder said.

"Sometimes I wasn't even running my proper route. I was breaking it off and getting to an open spot on the field and Luke was firing me the ball." Just throwing it toward Snyder seemed to be good luck for Ciannello and Lehigh. That luck came into play on Lehigh's second touchdown drive of the third period, which produced the go-ahead score. Ciannello fired a pass that went off Snyder's fingertips and then deflected off a defender's paws before it was hauled in by tight end Darin Henry for a 24-yard completion to the Colgate 1-yard-line. Two plays later, Ciannello kept it for the touchdown run that put Lehigh up to stay.

Earlier in the game those kind of breaks were going Colgate's way. The Engineers had drives to the Colgate 3 and 10-yard lines that turned into field goals. Another drive to the Raider 3 ended in an interception. But Lehigh never got discouraged. "Going into the locker room at halftime, we felt like we were so close," head coach Pete Lem-bo said.

"We just weren't finishing things." It looked like Lehigh's nation-leading 20-game regular season win streak, which began after the loss here in 1999, was finished when the Raiders moved down the field on the first possession of the third quarter. But quarterback Tom Mc-Cune, who made few mistakes in the first half, fumbled at the end of a run inside the Lehigh 20. The Engineers' Theo Moss recovered and the momentum had swung. Lehigh went 88 yards after the turnover to close within 14-12. The two-point conversion failed.

Morning Call file photo Lehigh QB Luke Ciannello breakup got the ball back to the hot CiannelloSnyder combo. An 85-yard drive ended in the go-ahead score. Lehigh added a 91-yard march in the fourth quarter, amazingly void of any Snyder receptions. This time, Phil Eversley made a 29-yard reception to the Colgate 15 and Lehigh scored in two plays from there.

Dudley ran slant. Carney threaded needle between two defenders. The drive: Seven plays. 77 yards. Keys were 18-yard pass to SE Peter Modelski.

16-yard OB draw by Carney. Chad Ritchie threw a 19-yard TD pass to Weyrauch two plays after replacing Glavic. Unfortunately, Ritchie also tossed an interception two possessions later. Weyrauch, who is emerging as Lafayette's go-to guy, finished with eight catches for 121 yards. And freshman tailback Joe McCourt ran for 81 yards, although only 31 came in the second half.

Dave Clawson, Fordham's young and personable coach, felt an 81-yard touchdown drive immediately after Lafayette stalled and punted from the Rams' 38 was the game's turning point. "That one was the key drive of the game," Clawson said. HANGE of as Hams Lafayette again scored on its first drive. But turnovers helped Fordham pull away. By TED MEIXELL Of The Morning Call As has been its custom ever since the Columbia game four weeks ago, Lafayette opened Saturday's Patriot League game with Fordham at Fisher Field with an impressive scoring drive, capping the 80-yard, 15-play march with a deft 11-yard touchdown pass from Marko Glavic to fellow sophomore John Weyrauch.

Unfortunately, while the Leopards did beat Columbia that day, they haven't been able to make winning customary. And although Lafayette jumped to an 11-point lead over the suddenly-competitive Rams, the Leopards also continued to make turnovers a custom. Lafayette threw four interceptions and fumbled the ball away once, and Fordham outscored it 28-7 in the second half to win going away, 45-24. "We're very disappointed," Lafayette coach Frank Tavani said. "Turnovers hurt us again." Still, more blame had to be placed on a porous defense than on the turnovers.

For whatever reason, once Fordham (4-4, 3-2) switched to a pass-first, run-second offensive philosophy, it moved the ball and scored seemingly at will. As was the case in a wild, 63-53 loss at Holy Cross two weeks ago, the Leopards simply couldn't stop the Rams, especially quarterback Mark Carney and flanker Javarus Dudley. Lafayette (1-7, 0-5) was unable to get any pressure on Carney, who had oodles of time to look for open receivers. Often, he found them sometimes running free with no defender within 10 yards. Carney tied a Fordham single game record with five touchdown passes and established a new season record of 21.

He finished 23-for-33 for 282 yards and was picked off only once. Dudley had a field day, catching three of Carney's scoring strikes and running four yards for a fourth TD on a reverse. For the day, Dudley caught 10 passes for 136 yards, while his TD run and four kickoff returns for 99 yards gave him 239 yards of all-purpose yardage. "Fordham made some big plays," Tavani said, "and we got beat deep a few times." Glavic had another up-and-down afternoon. It featured impressive stats (18 of 26 for 208 yards, including TD tosses of 1 1 and 35 yards to Weyrauch) but was marred by three more hurtful interceptions.

And, unfortunately, injury was added to insult when Glavic suffered a mild concussion while scrambling for 13 yards early In the fourth quarter. He did not return, but should be able to play at Georgetown next week. ft r. -in t-J i unit CIDER CUP BENCH PRESS OEADLIFT CHAMPIONSHIPS SATURDAY, NOV. 10 PHOENIX FITNESS 333 COURT Allrntown Weigh-ins 9-10 am; Lifting starts at 1 1 am DIVISIONS OPtNMED OPtN WOMEN MASTER MEN NOME SUBMHSTER Mil WOMEN WW TIRE MEN "WOMEN HIGH SCHOOl MEN WOMEN Head Referee: Fred Glass Meet Promoter: Allen Davis, 3 -time National Power Lifting Champiorl POST PARTY AT BANANA JOE'S ALLENTOWN A portion of Proceeds to go to disaster victims I A TOP OFB A GREAT TIRE BEAU? 7S, GET izsewine sub 5 4' Lafayette 17, Fordham 17 (0:34) The drive: Brecht kicked 24-yard field goal.

The drive: Five plays. 69 yards. SS Chris Rhodes intercepted Ritchie at Fordham 31. Indeed it was, since, prior to the punt, Lafayette seemed to be en route to a TD and a 31-31 tie. Instead, Fordham went the length of the field to make it 38-24.
