Wednesday. Fritz Shurmur, coached defenses in the NFL GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) Fritz Shurmur dedicated his life to studying, teaching and changing football. His imprint on the game and the men he taught to play it will be slow to fade. Shurmur, the Seattle Seahawks' defensive coordinator and the architect of the defense that led the Green Bay Packers to their 1997 Super Bowl victory, died of cancer at his home Monday.

He was 67. Shurmur spent two decades as a defensive coordinator for five teams and had the longest continuous tenure of any coordinator. He joined Seattle in January when Mike Holmgren was hired as the Seahawks' coach and GM after seven seasons in Green Bay. Shurmur returned to the Green Bay area for treatment of esophageal and liver cancer, which was found during a routine checkup in May. Stutz Jr. Mr. Lehigh Class of 22 George A.F. Stutz 99, Lehigh University Class of 22, died Monday, Aug. 30, in Palmerton Hospital.

He was the husband of Marie M. (Steigerwalt) Stutz for four years last November, and the late I Madeleine (Spilman) Stutz. He resided at 434 Edgemont Palmerton. A regular fixture at Lehigh events Stutz's death came just hours after attending Lehigh's freshmen rally to welcome Class of 2003. He carried in the Class of 22 flag, and was given a two-minute standing ovation by the crowd of freshman students, alumni and Lehigh officials.

Francis Figlear, a senior development associate at Lehigh called Stutz "Mr. Lehigh" and said Stutz was associated with the university since arriving as a freshman in 1918. "Lehigh was obviously his love. He was a completely devoted alumnus who never wavered in his support of this university." Figlear said that he and Stutz spent some of Stutz's final hours at the rally, where Stutz expressed a desire to attend just one more annual Lehigh-Lafayette game in a tradition that Stutz observed more than 70 times. Stutz remained active in Lehigh affairs for several decades, serving at various times as class reunion chairman, class president, class treasurer, class correspondent and class agent.

He also served as chairman of Lehigh's planned giving efforts since 1995 and was a member of the Reunion Back Every Year Club. From 1951 to 1952. he served as president of the Alumni Association. He received a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering in 1922; and his master's in physics in 1924 from Johns Hopkins University, where he earned a doctorate in physics in 1929. Stutz retired in 1966 as manager of technical sales of the New Jersey Zinc Palmerton, where he worked for 44 years.

Born in Washington, D.C., he was a son of the late George A. Sr. and Wilhelmina (Fey) Stutz. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Palmerton. He was an Army veteran of World War I.

He was a recipient of the Golden Deeds award from the Palmerton Exchange Club in 1973, and took a "best of show" trophy in 1971 from the Palmerton Camera Club. Her birthplace was incorrect in Sunday's obiturary. planned to retire. Shurmur spent five seasons with the Packers and was instrumental in the team's run to consecutive Super Bowl appearances. He also served as a defensive coach with the Phoenix Cardinals, the Los Angeles Rams, the New England Patriots and the Detroit Lions. Shurmur joined the Packers in 1994, replacing current Green Bay head coach Ray Rhodes as defensive coordinator.

Shurmur was the Rams' defensive coordinator from 1983-90, and in 1989 he developed a 2-5 "Eagle" defense to deal with personnel shortages. Los Angeles finished fifth in the NFC that year. He spent three years in Phoenix before joining the Packers. Shurmur was known as a defensive innovator and a premiere teacher of the game. He wrote four books on defense and coached for his entire adult life, beginning in 1954 as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Albion (Mich.) College.

He was a defensive coach at the University of Wyoming from 1962-70 and head coach at the school from 1971-74. A native of Wyandotte, he held a master's degree in education and received an honorary doctorate from Albion in 1997.
