2B Tuesday, February 19, 2002 State Colleges MSU golf struggles in Florida tourney Lady Rebels split with Colorado St. University of Mississippi Mississippi State University Golf Softball From special reports OXFORD The University of Mississippi's Lindsey Whatley hurled her second straight shutout in helping the Rebel Softball team earn a doubleheader split with Colorado State Monday at Ole Miss Softball Complex. The Rebels (9-4) rebounded for a 2-0 win in game two after dropping the early game, 5-2. Whatley, a freshman righthander from Huntsville, limited the Rams (3-6) to four hits with five strikeouts. She has surrendered only nine hits in her last 14 innings in raising her record to 4-1.

After five scoreless innings, Desiree Layman singled home Becky Testin to crack the scoreboard, and Phyllis Manley followed with a run-scoring double to hand Ole Miss the two-run lead. Layman finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI. In game one, DeDe Justice tied a UM home run record, but the Rebels could not overcome four errors in defeat. "We didn't play as well as we should have," MSU head coach Greg Martin said.

"We have got to make better decisions out there. We got a lot of big numbers out there, in places where they should- n't Tulsa holds the team lead by two shots over Colorado. MSU hosts Vanderbilt The Mississippi State men's as-ketball team will travel to Nashville, Tenn. to face Vanderbilt at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Vanderbilt holds a 14-11 record while going 4-8 in Southeastern Conference play. MSU is currently 19-7 and 6-6 in SEC action.

MSU will 'host Ole Miss this Saturday at 5 p.m. in a battle for state bragging rights. legiate game, Justice, a freshman catcher from Vera Beach, belted her fifth homer, a two-run shot in the third inning, to tie Heather Swinney's Ole Miss single-season record.
