mauve KAVBABB, tmtoKrowx, rcori, tuutci Charleroi In Tourney Semifinal Tonight SPORTS STANDARD By TOD TRENT Crohf KtUvi Spwta We notice where those who are supposed to know about such things are picking Charleroi and its height tonight against Uniontown and its speed in their scrni- fmai tt'PIAL Class.A tourney contest. Definitely the Cougars are going to have a decided overall advantage over the Haiders in the height department. It will be the tallest team the Raiders have had to run up against this season. Charleroi's front line of center Al Thlry, forwards OJlie Payne and John Hanchin measure 6-5, 6-4 and fi-2 respectively. Six fool Joe Uhlman and 5-lfl Jim Chacko round out the club.

With all the height in the forecourt Chacko, the Junior playmaker, is considered by many to he the key for iiiu Cougars. He was Ore-determining factor in the Cougars' win over Springdale and has been the steady player on the club all season. Payne is also a dangerous operator. The three- year veteran has rewritten the Charleroi scoring records for one game, season and career. It will be remembered last season that he hit clo.se to the 30-poini mark in the exhibition game here against Unionlown.

As though Thiry. Payne and Hanchin didn't represent enough height the Cougars have three reserves who come in at better than six feet in height. 1 Charleroi doesn't have the overall team speed of the Uniontown quintet. In the pre-gamc figuring speed is the only thing observers are willing to concede to the Raiders. Will Layoff Hurt? The question is being asked if the layoff is going to hurt.

The only answer we have is to tell you to wait until around 9:30 this evening. Wq'll all know by then. do feel (hat if either team is going to he affected by the inactivity it will be the Maroon and White. They haven't played for almost two weeks (12 days to be exact) after rolling to three big wins.in six days in wln- ning (he Section 2 title and' two tournament encounters. On the other hand Charleroi last played on March so will be swinging into action after an eight-day layoff.

Chances are the Cougars had a better opportunity to, retain their competitive edge. This doesn't mean we are discounting Uniontown's chances in tonight's flail game. We have watched the Raiders enough this campaign to know they are capable of performing, in excellent style. will (ake a (op performance to put them over (he top against the Cougars and into (he finals for (he third time since the WPIAL tournament began. "Desire, an ability to come up with the big game when it has needed it, excellent team play have been some of the factors which have carried the Maroon and White team this far.

We hope all of these hidden factors are working for the team again tonight. This is one game we would like to see entered on the victory side of the ledger. Uniortfown has been in the WIAI, tournament on 16 occasions. This is their fifth trip into the semifinals and twice they havev made it to the finals. We're all for making it three appearances in the finals.
