19 Dec. 28 Jan. 5 Jackson didn't steal hit songs, jury says The Associated Press LOS ANGELES Michael Jack-son did not steal his nits 'Thriller," "The Girl is Mine" and "We Are the World" from two other songwriters, a federal jury ruled Wednesday. The panel deliberated for just over three hours before returning with its verdict in the copyright infringement trial against Jackson and three others. "I'm just very happy that all my clients' innocence has been reaffirmed by the jury," lawyer Robert Rotstein saia.

"We always thought that there was absolutely no merit to the suit." Reynaud Jones and Robert Smith, two childhood neighbors of the Jackson family in Gary, alleged parts of their songs were pirated for the three Jackson hits, including "We Are the World." Jones claimed the 1985 African famine relief anthem was based on his 1977 song, "What Will Become of the Children." Jones contended that "We Are the World" co-writer Lionel Richie, "Thriller" songwriter Rod Temperton and record producer Siincy Jones also lifted part of demo tape, which had been left with the Jackson family. xi SOUTHERN TIER (N.Y.) The magazine's tongue-in-cheek poll, developed by two male editors and in February's issue, is the counterpart to Esquire's 1991 masculinity poll. A feminine insight: Women would rather be thought "brilliant but plain" (75 percent) over "sexy but dumb" (25 percent). Most startling to Esquire's senior editor and poll creator Bill Tonelli: Women would rather be run over by a truck than gain 150 pounds. Not so shocking, says the pollster, Marian Salzman, president of BKG Youth Inc. Her favor Day 5 of trial WEDNESDAY: Lawyers made their closing statements once the defense rested at 1 0:25 a.m.

after calling one witness: Shelby L. VanGorder, the girlfriend of defendant Stephen J. Matthews. VanGorder testified that Matthews said he was at Sandra A. Maloney's home on the night she died, but said nothing about a stabbing.

TODAY: The jury is expected to begin deliberations after VanGorder said she based her suspicions on a phone number she found in their bedroom. She said she dialed the number. "I got an answering machine saying, 'This is Sandra she recalled. VanGorder said Matthews explained that he had Maloney's phone number because he knows her son. She added that Matthews said he was at Maloney's home on the night of her death, but didn't say anything about stabbing her.

Maloney: Jury getting case poll says ite: Women would be more upset if their husbands became blind than impotent. Important issues? More than 30 percent admitted to pressuring men into sex. "It reminds us that it's not a solely male impulse," says Tonelli. Salzman says more than a third disagreed with the phrase, "In sexual relations, no always means no." Though some were "horrified" by the poll and refused to answer, says Salzman, most were amused. Results of Esquire's earlier male poll prompted amusement, not offense, says Tonelli.

"I'm sure women will also see the humor in this." hearing Judge William A. Danaher charge. JURY OPTIONS: Acquittal. First-degree manslaughter (up to 25 years in prison). Second-degree murder (up to life in prison).

QUOTABLE: "There is absolutely nothing that would connect Mr. Matthews to the crime scene other than Mr. Matthews." Public Defender Joseph J. Balok Jr. VanGorder told Balok that Matthews never mistreated her but she had him arrested for pushing her.

The charges were dropped, she said. i But in response to questions from the prosecutor, VanGorde? said Matthews pushed her down a set of stairs while she was pre1 gnant in March 1993 and hit her with a telephone in the fall of 1992. But second-in-command Al Gore is the leader among libidinous women of Generation X. A new Esquire poll of 1,000 women age 18-25 asked who would be "hotter in bed." The president drew 26 percent of the vote; Gore got 67 percent. Tipper Gore was judged hotter line. "His version was that it was an horrible accident," said Wet-more, his voice echoing off the walls and ceiling of the cavernous Elmira courtroom. "He stabs her to put her out of her misery.

Then he cuts the telephone wire for some unknown reason. "He silenced her by cutting her throat. He plunged the knife into her chest. With blood on his hands, the (phone) wire is cut. He wants to make sure there is never a call made from the residence." The prosecution called 14 witnesses before resting Tuesday.

The defense rested at 10:25 a.m. Wednesday after calling only one witness: Matthews' girlfriend, Shelby L. VanGorder of Ithaca. Prosecution witnesses had questioned Matthews' claim of an affair with Maloney. But under questioning from Balok, VanGorder, who lived with Matthews at 743 Roe Elmira, said she suspected Matthews had an affair with Maloney beginning in June.

Matthews said he stabbed Maloney in the chest to "put her out of her misery," cut the telephone cord near her bedroom and fled in panic, police said.

Balok said his client didn't report the death to police because "he was afraid nobody would believe him." The public defender said Matthews' statement to Williams and Mucci presents a "reasonable" defense against intentional murder. Balok cited earlier testimony that there was no evidence of sexual assault or physical signs that Maloney tried to defend herself. "There is absolutely nothing that would connect Mr. Matthews to the crime scene other than Mr. Matthews," Balok said.

In a voice filled with passion, Wetmore, the prosecutor, said a key to proof of Matthews' intent to kill Maloney was his admission that he cut her telephone Little Rock 5035cdy Los Angeles 7850clr Louisville 4229cdy Miami Beach 7967cdy Milwaukee 321 6cdy Mpls-St Paul 2402cdy Nashville 4535cdy New Orleans 6250cdy Norfolk.Va. 5840rn Oklahoma City 5129cdy Omaha 3919cdy Orlando 7762cdy Portland.Maine 2622cdy Raleigh 5035rn St Louis 4127cdy Salt Lake City 4124cdy San Francisco 6245clr Seattle 5145m Tampa 7660cdy Tucson 6639clr 4032rn Dai-Ptwrtn 5538cdy Denver 5228cdy Des Moines 251 6cdy Detroit 3520cdy Honolulu 8065clr Houston 6250cdy Indianapolis 4025cdy Kansas City 3724cdy Las Vegas 6134clr TALKING PHONE BOOK WEATHER HOTLINE 737-1540 your TaiwnB phone bo codes FREE IN THE ELMIRA CALLING AREAI nnnnnnnnpnnnnnnnrtTtTTTlJDiPnD Customer Service Directory General DirlWDU TWIN TIERS LIFE -5151 104m.Mw.gN -mSS Women over 40 are having babies.
