FIRST THE MORNING CALL. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2000m Cf i Tf, 7 iAry I'i P7 1 Hardaway re-sign Caps Flyers with Miami Heat From Call wire services NBA ROUNDUP 1 44, The Miami Heat re-signed five-time All-Star point guard Tim Hardaway, the team said. The Heat didn't disclose terms the contract. The Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel reported on Sept. 22 that Hardaway had agreed to a one-year contract worth about $12 million, making him the National Basketball Association's highest-paid point guard.

"We are absolutely delighted that Tim Hardaway has agreed to sign a contract for the upcoming season," said Heat coach Pat Riley. "Timmy has been, and will be, an integral part of this team's success." Hardaway, 34, is currently playing for the U.S. team at the Olympic Games in Sydney, averaging 8.4 points, 1.6 assists and 1.8 rebounds in five games. The U.S. meets France in the gold medal game this weekend.

Hardaway had been frustrated at not having a contract and considered signing with the Indiana Pacers, who lost point guard Mark Jackson to the Toronto Raptors last month. The 6-foot Hardaway has career averages of 19.0 points and 8.9 assists during a 10-year career with Golden State and Miami. He has averaged 17.7 points and 7.0 assists in 61 career playoff games. Cavaliers: Cleveland signed swingman Willie Burton, guards Khalid Reeves and Johnny Hems-ley and center Robert Werdann on Friday. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Burton, who spent last season in Greece and the USBL, has averaged 10.3 points in eight seasons with Miami, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Sam Antonio and Charlotte. He scored a career-high 53 points for Philadelphia in a 1994 game against Miami. Reeves played in three games for Chicago last season and also spent time in Greece and France. He has averaged 7.8 points and 3.2 assists in six seasons with Miami, Charlotte, New Jersey, Dallas, Detroit and Chicago. Werdann, who played in the ABL last season, last appeared in the NBA with New Jersey in 1996-97.

Hemsley averaged 18.1 points last season for the University of Miami. Mavericks: Dallas signed first-round draft picks Etan Them as, Courtney Alexander and Don- nell Harvey to three-year con- tracts Friday. Second-round pick Eduardo Najera, the Mexican star who played at Oklahoma, agreed to two-year deal. Thomas, the former Syracuse power forward, was selected 12th in the NBA draft. He averaged 13.6 points as a senior and was sixth in the nation in blocked shots with a 3.7 average.

Alexander went 13th to Orlaif-do as part of a prearranged that sent him to Dallas for the Mavs' top pick next year, a sec- -ond-rounder and $3 million. The former Fresno State guard led the, nation in scoring last season with a 24.8 average. Harvey, a forward selected 22nd by New York, averaged 10.1 points and 7.0 rebounds in his only season at Florida. Najera was selected 38th by Houston. Under the NBA's rookie salary scale, Thomas will receive within 20 percent of about $3.7 million over three seasons, Alexander wui-get about $3.5 million, and Harvey about $2.3 million.

Pacers: Vem Fleming, who played 11 seasons with the Indiana Pacers, has joined the team as an assistant coach. "I've wanted to hire Vern for long time," Pacers president Don nie Walsh said Saturday. "I went to (head coach Isiah Thomas) and told him he would be good for our situation, and it was done." Fleming was the Pacers' first round draft pick in 1984, and started at point guard during most of his tenure with the He completed his NBA career with the New Jersey Nets in the 1995-96 season, and then played one season in Europe. PATRICIA MCDONNELL Associated Press deflects a shot by Buffalo Sabres' Jean-Pierre Dumont during game in Boston Saturday. From Call wire services Calle Johansson broke a tie with 2:30 left in the third period as the Washington Capitals edged the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 in an exhibition game Saturday night.

Working on a delayed penalty call, Steve Konowalchuk gathered in a loose puck behind the Flyers net and centered a i I NHL ROUNDUP pass to Johansson, who beat goalie Brian Boucher from between the circles. Richard Zednik also scored and Konowalchuk added two assists for the Capitals (2-3-1). Craig Billington, expected to shoulder the load until Vezina Trophy winner Olaf Kolzig returns from arthroscopic knee surgery in mid-October, made 22 saves. John LeClair scored for the Flyers (5-3-0), but left midway through the second period with a minor knee injury and did not return as a precaution. A tripping penalty against Washington's Joe Reekie set up a power-play goal by LeClair that gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead with 3:27 left in the opening period.

From the right wing, Mark Recchi feathered a pass along the goal line that LeClair pushed past Billington from in front of the crease for his team-high fifth preseason goal. Zednik tallied on a breakaway with 6:42 remaining in regulation for a 1-1 tie. Working off a neutral-zone pass from Steve Konowalchuk, Zednik forced Boucher to come out to cut down the angle. When Boucher, who finished with 22 sayes, moved between the circles, Zednik deked him down, mdved around him and flipped the puck into an empty net. Ottawa defenseman Sami Salo left in the first period with a bruised right ankle.

Before the game, Montreal assigned right wing Arron Asham to the Quebec Citadelles of the AHL, and announced that defenseman Sheldon Souray will miss two weeks with an abdominal strain. 7 nySun loleliis Wolf encteii. Kariya is suspended until a hearing is conducted. O'Neill, who had a career-high 25 goals last season, had missed the team's first six exhibition games because of a neck strain. He scored on his first shot in the first period. Meanwhile, Moss looked sharp in his third start despite not getting much work. He was signed as a free agent in the offseason and beat out Jean-Marc Pelletier as Arturs Irbe's backup, but had lost a pair of one-goal games in the preseason.
