The system, which perpetuates itself, has produced such reported "records" as the 710,000 overall attesdance in and the 205,000 single-day, attendance in 1972.

Many people like to know crowd sizes, but what is reported as an estimate is apparently lionized through time so that it becomes an actual head count. unintentional, bloated estimates eventually acquire some of the mythical ring akin to the ground hog of Punxsutawney. "I think they've always been overestimated," said show dir Wellington Smith Tuesday. "But I don't know of any other methods, other than the ones that have been used, that we could use." This is Smith's first year as director. The problem is that people swarm into the free show numerous entrances.

Even if there were some of the same visitors would go in and out and be counted more than once. According to Smith's assistant, Donald Neubauer, here's how the crowd is estimated: --Count the number of parked cars--on the show grounds and at shuttle points outside--and multiply by 3.4. --Count the number of school buses and multiply by 40. --Ask lunch counter and commodity operators how their receipts stack up with other years. --Ask some of the 170 slate police assigned to the show for their opinions of crowd sizes.

These are polled together daily for Smith's acceptance. Smith, described by some subordinates. as a conservative when it comes to estimating the crowd, hopes to change the system soon. Smith estimates Monday's crowd at 120,000 and Tuesday's at 140,000. Greene County Winners In State Farm Show Two Greene County persons have won honors at the state farm show.
