Born January 22, 1930 in Norene, TN, he was the son of the late William Grimmett and Ruby Maye Morse Cummings.

He was a lifelong farmer and was employed by Wynn's Precision Rubber for thirty-four years. He was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church for forty-one years, where he had served in many capacities, including serving as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Riley (Anita) Cummings and Billy Cummings, and two brothers-in-law, Thomas Earps and Ernest Watson. He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Allie Lee Tarpley Cummings; four children, Judy (Mike) Cox of Lebanon, James (Cindy) Cummings of Smyrna, Joyce (Charles Reeves of Lebanon and Joe (Maria) Cummings of Los Angeles, CA; seven grandchildren, Medana Hobbs (Greg) Hemontolor, April Reeves (Wayne) Oakley, Jason (Phyllis) Hobbs, Tina Reeves, Jimmy Joe Cummings, Kim Cummings (Kevin) Sandlin, and Deborah Cox (Ronnie) Henderson; seven greatgrandchildren, Evan Grayson Hemontolor, Deshea Oakley, Ashley Hobbs, Nikki Cummings, Megan Strube and Madison Sandlin; three sisters, Mattie Earps and Jane Watson of Lebanon, Minnie (Ronnie) Sturgeon of Dallas, TX; three brothers, Boone (Belle) Cummings and Manuel (Faye) Cummings, all of Lebanon and Albert (Aubrey) Cummings of Madison; many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Joined the Marine Corps in 1943-1945, served as one of the first women in aircraft, bombers, to teach radio, radar. Employed by Vanderbilt University Hospital in the Pathology Labs, an entrepreneur, and finally, worked for Cain-Sloan. Mary is survived by daughters, Joo (Michael) Fouts of Douglasville, GA, Sharon (Gary) Marmitt of Brunswick, GA; grandson, Darren Fouts of Kennesaw, GA; greatgrandchildren, Lauren Fouts and Max Fouts. Preceded in death by parents, Maxie Lee Bishop Poag and Hugh White Poag; brother, Charles Hugh Poag and sister-in-law, Louise Poag. During WWII, he served 3 years in the Army Air Force. After the Army Service, he attended the University of Tennessee. He retired from the Nashville U.S. Postal Service in April 1982, after 35 years of service. He was a Scottish Rite Mason and Al Menah Shriner, a lifetime member of Phoenix Lodge 132, and member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 25th, from the chapel Family Heritage Funeral Home in Gallatin, TN, with Rev. Cathie Leimenstall and Rev. Pat Smith conducting the service. Burial will be at Crestview Memorial Park.

Mr. Upton served his country in the U.S. Army.
