Born January 22, 1930 in Norene, TN, he was the son of the late William Grimmett and Ruby Maye Morse Cummings.

He was a lifelong farmer and was employed by Wynn's Precision Rubber for thirty-four years. He was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church for forty-one years, where he had served in many capacities, including serving as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Riley (Anita) Cummings and Billy Cummings, and two brothers-in-law, Thomas Earps and Ernest Watson.
