S. Mississippi karate A number of area competitors scored well last weekend at the first annual Lite Beer-Southern Mississippi Karate Championships Miss. State's Jody Hurst signs with Detroit and had dual basketball-baseball scholarship offers to Delta State and William Carey. However, he ofted to take a partial scholarship in order to play baseball at Mississippi State. The right-handed hitting, left-throwing center fielder has been a three-year starter for the Bulldogs and is a two-time All-Southeastern Conference SEC pick.

He is a three-year selection on the Academic All-SEC squad. Hurst said he was told that he would be assigned to Niagara Falls of the New York-Penn League. He will fly out of Meridian on Monday. So he did. Hurst and Detroit scout Jim Bierman had been discussing contract figures all afternoon Wednesday.

He then signed with Bierman on Thursday. This is the second consecutive year Hurst has been drafted. He was picked by the Minnesota Twins in the 24th round last season, after announcing to the pro teams that he would not sign. Hurst was The Meridian Star's Lauderdale County Player of The Year his senior season at West Lauderdale High School. He was a two-sport standout for the Knights, From AP Wire Reports MERIDIAN After a restless night, Jody Hurst has decided he wants to try professional baseball.

The former West Lauderdale and Mississippi State standout has signed a contract to play professional baseball with the Detroit Tigers, and will report next Monday to their Class A team in Niagara Falls, N. Y. While Hurst declined to reveal the amount of his signing bonus, he said he was pleased. However, signing with the Tigers wasn't a sure thing for Hurst. He was drafted in the 10th round by Detroit, but had another year of eligibility left at State, and it appeared for a while that he would return to the Bulldogs.

Hurst said that he rejected Detroit's first offer Wednesday, then later that night rejected the team's second offer. "I didn't sleep well at all that night," Hurst said. "I did a lot of tossing and turning. "When I went to bed I had planned to not sign and go ahead and play on the USA team. But, something happened.

I don't even know what it was. When I woke up, I just decided I wanted to sign." Scott and Magic Johnson visited the school's medical facility for treatment of injuries sustained during the NBA playoffs. Scott has a partially torn hamstring. See Lakers-Pistons story on page 6C.
