Thursday, December 15, 1988 Hattiesburg AMERICAN 5B Forfeit snaps Clarkdale's 32-game grid skid 1 a CLARKDALE (AP) -Clarkdale High School's 32-game football losing streak has ended with the forfeit of a game by Scott Central. Scott Central was forced to forfeit all of its games in the past season, Woodrow Marsh, executive secretary of the Mississippi High School Activities Association, said this week. "They had a player who was in his fifth year of participation. He had dropped out of school for a year and then changed schools. There were no grades on his transcript that year so it got past them," Marsh said.

Students have four years of athletic eligibility upon entering the ninth grade. "He sat out a year, but when they played his old school, they reported it," Marsh said. Clarkdale Principal Charles Easom said the team would rather have won it on the field, but l.e was pleased. "It does officially break the string, and that's a start. We will just have to go on from there," he said.

The forfeit left Clarkdale's record officially at 1-8. It will give The Rebels defeated Clarkdale 47-15 to spoil the Bulldogs' homecoming on Oct. 14. Marsh said the Scott Central's football program will be on probation through the first four weeks of the 1989 season. "They will be eligible for the playoffs or a bowl, but what this does call for is a better check of their eligibility roster next year," Marsh said.

Southern Mississippi's senior kicker, who had expected the Dec. 23 Independence Bowl would be his career finale, received an invitation to play for the South team in the Senior Bowl Jan. 21 at Mobile, Ala. USM defensive back and kick return specialist James Henry was named to The Sporting News 1988 college football All-America team. Henry, a product of Poplarville, scored two touchdowns on punt returns this season and had six scores for his career, one short of the NCAA record for career punt returns for touchdowns. He also had one interception and 56 tackles this season. Hawkins corrections The Hawkins-North Forrest Junior High ninth-grade basketball score was incorrectly reported in Tuesday's sports section. North Forrest won the game 39-31, not 43-32 as reported.

Kevin Wright's name was also inadvertently omitted. He led the winners with 12 points. Also, in the Hawkins-Petal report, Hawkins' Donald Poole was misidentified. Poole scored 18 points in Hawkins' 64-32 victory. The American regrets the errors.
