Elmira Notre Dame adding lacrosse Manwaring's return crowding picture Gannett News Service "We've had some people express interest in it and we're looking at several," he said.

D'Aloisio said the addition of lacrosse is in keeping with Notre Dame's wish to "offer a quality and comprehensive athletic program." D'Aloisio said he was prompted to suggest the addition of a lacrosse program after a number of Notre Dame students and parents expressed interest in the sport. "Some kids and parents mentioned that they'd really like it," D'Aloisio said. "I approached Star-Gazette High school lacrosse in Elmira has been talked about for years. Now Elmira Notre Dame is taking action. The school will add a junior varsity lacrosse team next spring and employ long-time Corning East coach and nationally-known lacrosse legend Joe Corcoran to help get the program started.

Notre Dame Athletic Director Mike D'Aloisio said he's taking applications for the lacrosse coaching position now. Sister (Notre Dame principal Sister Mary Walter Hickey) with it, we did some surveys, presented it to the (Board of Directors) and they approved it." The addition of lacrosse could mean a boost in Notre Dame's enrollment, which has fallen to below 250, making the school Class in all sports under New York state's classes A-B-C-D enrollment classification system. "That's not our main objective," D'Aloisio said. "We wanted a broad, comprehensive sports program, but if it helps enrollment, great." Corcoran is one of the founders of high school lacrosse around New York state and he built Corning East into a lacrosse power in the '60s and 7'0s. "What better guy to get a lacrosse program started," D'Aloisio said.

Throughout the '80s, there was talk of the Elmira City School District beginning a lacrosse program for Elmira Free Academy and Southside schools. But the idea has yet to get beyond the discussion table. Pioneers continue win streak Victories posted MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL tion," Craig said when asked how he planned to juggle the three catchers. "Decker and Kennedy both are swinging the bat pretty good right now. Their averages aren't that high, but they've been hitting the ball pretty hard." So just how much playing time Manwaring will get remains to be seen.

"I'm not sure yet," Craig said. "I'm going to wait and see how much he's progressed." Ironically, Decker had been sent down to Phoenix, and Manwaring called up, on May 26. But after playing two games, Manwaring broke the middle finger on his right hand and went on theDL. Decker, who was then recalled from Phoenix after playing only one game, has apparently impressed Craig enough to remain on the big club. "He's improved both offensively and defensively the last couple of weeks," Craig said.

As for Manwaring, well, after blaming himself for Thursday's loss, the subject of playing time wasn't a good one to bring up. "After the way I played, I don't know," he said. PHILADELPHIA This is one case when the term "strength in numbers" can be looked at two ways. The San Francisco Giants activated catcher Kirt Manwaring from the disabled list Thursday and optioned outfielder Darnell Coles to Phoenix. That gives San Francisco three catchers on the roster Horse-heads native Manwaring, Terry Kennedy and rookie Steve Decker.

But while that may give manager Roger Craig the luxury of having plenty of depth behind the plate, a look at the batting average of each player doesn't necessarily mean the club will get the kind of offensive output it needs. Sure, Manwaring entered Thursday's game hitting .400, but that was only with five at-bats in four games. In six rehab games with Triple-A Phoenix and one with Single-A San Jose, Manwaring was a combined 3-for-25 Kennedy, meanwhile, was hitting .228 at the All-Star break, and Decker was batting a mere .219. Manwaring was in the starting lineup Thursday and went 1-for-4, dropping his average to .333. Gardner later scored when Tim Moore doubled. In the Elmira fifth, Rodriguez singled to lead off the inning, and following two groundouts Marin hit a clutch double to drive in Rodriguez and tie the game at 2-2. The Pioneers' pitchers shut down Geneva the rest of the way, allowing only one batter to get past first for the remainder of the game. Corey Bailey pitched two hitless innings to finish the game while striking out four to pick up his second win of the season. The Pioneers continue to hold a three-game lead over Batavia, who defeated Hamilton 10-3 Friday night.
