"I just talked with the doctors and they assured me everything was going smoothly," said Robis-kie, who is overseeing the Raiders practices while Shell is away.

"They say it's nothing that serious." Dr. Stephen Corday, a cardiologist in internal medicine who is Shell's attending physician, said Tuesday "it's excellent because we got it under rapid control. Young, who lost a major-league record 27th consecutive decision this season, was optioned to the New York Mets' Class AAA Norfolk farm team. The Mets want Young, 27, to start for Norfolk, giving him a chance to work on his pitches. The struggling right-hander had been demoted to the bullpen, making his last 12 appearances in relief.

But he struggled over the weekend at Philadelphia, allowing a game-winning grand slam to Kim Batiste on Friday in the ninth inning. "I personally agonized over the decision," manager Dallas Green said. Green wants Young, who relies on a fastball and slider, to develop his other pitches at Norfolk. Young hasn't been effective as a reliever, going 1-8 with a 4.21 ERA and three saves in 29 appearances. He was 2-14 last season.

"I feel for the kid," Green said. "I want to save him for the Mets, to save him for himself." SIMON WHEELER Star-Gazette "The transition from Elmira to Utica has been pretty good," Holt said. "Basically, we're doing the same job just in a different town." Holt said Utica's Murnane Field is due for similar renovations and is excited about seeing the stadium improved. "It's definitely a plus in the player's point of view," Holt said.

"And it certainly couldn't hurt attendance." After watching his Utica Blue Sox fall to the Pioneers, 2-1, in the first game of a doubleheader, a downpour hit Dunn Field and forced the nightcap to be suspended with Elmira leading, 4-0, in the top of the fifth inning. The game-one victory was El-mira's sixth in row, surpassing an earlier five-game streak as its longest of the season.

The second game will be completed on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Utica prior to the teams' regularly-scheduled contest. "It's nice to have a four-run cushion," Elmira manager Lynn Jones said of the upcoming continued game. "It's a great oppor-tunity for us to start on a positive note." Elmira right-hander Andy Lar-kin (4-6) didn't have any problems shutting down Utica in the opener. He held the Blue Sox to two hits and retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced to record a seven-inning complete game.

Larkin's only blemish on the scoreboard was a solo home run over the right-field fence by Utica catcher John Stratton in the third. Utica's Shawn Senior held Elmira scoreless until the sixth inning. Scott Southard and Billy McMillon led off the sixth with bunt singles. Following a strikeout by Matt Martinez, Dave Berg singled to score Southard and tie the game. Robb Berryman was then brought on to face Ron Brown with runners at first and third and one out.

Former Pioneers manager Holt happy to be skipper in Utica By GEORGE HAWKE Star-Gazette It was a homecoming of sorts Tuesday for Utica Blue Sox manager Dave Holt at Dunn Field. Holt, who has the Blue Sox in first place in the McNamara Division of the New York-Penn League, managed two season for the Elmira Pioneers, 1991 and 1992, and he made his first return to Dunn Field. "It looks a little different," said Holt, referring to the Phase I renovations the stadium has gone through as part of the Major League Baseball Agreement. "I've gotten to talk to some of the people I knew and to see some of the old faces." Holt posted a 78-74 record in two seasons as the Pioneers' skipper, including a 47-30 record in 1991 and a title, the first since 1976, for Elmira in the McNamara West Division.

Holt became Utica's after the Boston Red Sox moved their Class short-season, minor league affiliate to Utica after Elmira didn't renew its minor league contract with the major league club.
