The Elmira. Pioneers' recent tear.j came to a screeching halt Monday evening Erie's Ainsworth Field.

-jliin The Erie Orioles pounded five Pioneers for 23 hits and a 14-3 New York-Penn League victory. Elmira had won four of its last six games going into the game, including a dramatic 2-1 win in Ge-neva Sunday evening. Eric Wedge gave Elmira an early lead in the sec-r ond inning when he took Erie hurler Art Rhode's. 390-plus feet over the left field fence. Rhodes settled down and gave up only one hit the rest of the way and struck out 14 Elmt? batters.

Erie tied in the bottom of the second on an un-" canny play. Doug Reynolds clubbed a Paul Quantrill pitch over the center field fence, but the ball bouncei! off Roosevelt Elementary school, which holds them Orioles clubhouse, and back into play. The umptf ing crew failed to recognize that the ball had" cleared the fence and Elmira's Ed Perozo tagged out Reynolds, who was on his way to third during his apparent home run trot. i Tony Beasley homered to lead off the Erie thwrf? and Pete Rose Jr. followed with a single and later scored on Horowitz' triple.

Rose went 3-for-4, including two runs scored anbV an RBI. Elmira fans can watch of the son of Cincift- natti Reds' manager Pete Rose when the Orioles come to Elmira Wednesday and Thursday. The Orioles blew the game wide open in the fourth by scoring six times, with help from two RUl' oneers errors. The final crushing blow of the inning was given1 by Erie's Carey Metts, who delivered his third hom'-" er of the season, a two-run shot to give Erie a 104-; lead. Elmira got its final two runs in the fifth as McNeeley walked an went to second on Rhodes wild pitch.

Ed Perozo walked and catcher Louis Dorante livered a single that scored Jeff McNeeley and sent Perozo to third. Perozo scored when Garret Jenkins beat out Erie double play.
