Tony Has 141, Jack 142 Nicklaus Trails Jacklin by Stroke in British Open Star -Gazette PORT ELMIRA, N.Y. JULY 13, 1972 PAGE 25 MUIRFIELD, Scotland (AP) Tony Jacklin of England, despite a triple bogey, took the early lead today in the British Open Golf Championship, a stroke ahead of inconsistent Jack Nicklaus and young Johnny Miller, who shot a double eagle and a course record 66. Jacklin, who won this tournament in 1969, stumbled to a triple bogey six on the 13th hole and finished with a one-overpar 72 for a total of 141. He began the round one stroke behind Peter Tupling, an pro, who shot a 68 Wednesday. Nicklaus, who opened with a 70, sank: three birdies but took four bogeys as he managed to stay in contention with a 72.

Miller, rebounding from an opening 76, shot a sizzling four-under-par 32 on the outgoing nine which included his double eagle two. Joining the two American pros at 142 were South African Gary Player, shooting for his third British Open title, who fired a 71, and Peter Townsend of Britain, who added a 70 to his opening 72. Miller's stunning double eagle came on the 5 fifth hole when he holed out with a three wood from 'V on the sixth and seventh, once missing the green and once three-putting. A low stone wall on the left saved him from hitting his second shot out of bounds on the ninth, and he bo-geyed the 10th when he came up short of the green with a three iron. "My iron play was pathetic," said the man who already has won the Masters and U.S.

Open titles this year and is seeking to add the British Open and PGA crowns for the never accomplished pro Grand Slam. He rallied with birdies on the 11th and 13th, each time hitting an eight iron to within four feet of the stick. He made birdie 4 on the 17th, sinking an eightfoot putt after putting his second in a bunker by the green. about 280 yards. The shot drew a roar from the usually reserved Scots.

Nicklaus was shaking his head in disbelief over his poor play in fantastically good conditions for Scotland. "I said to myself early this morning, "Jiminy Christmas, I ought to shoot 65 because everybody else is going to be shooting 65. 1 thought I couldn't possibly shoot out of the 60s, but I just kept making mistakes." He made consecutive bogeys 1 Threatens to Bolt Chess Event 7 s.v ft 1,. i As fit, if: Cameras Upset Fischer REYKJAVIK 1nairA LV Dnkki, Finger Lakes iKtv vj visible in the dimness outside the lighted players' circle, and it could not be heard by Fischer, but aides said the knowledge of its presence unnerved him. Chief referee Lothar Schmid of West Germany, who makes the decisions on all contested points in connection with the match, told Fischer during his walkout there was nothing he could do about the camera.

Film and television rights for the match have been sold to an American promoter, and Fischer and Spassky are to get a share of the proceeds, estimated at a minimum of $27,500 each. "It's quite serious. He may not play at all," said a member of Fischer's entourage who asked not to be identified.

Fischer was scheduled to meet the world champion from the Soviet Union later today for the second game of their 24-game match. The Amiercan challenger lost the first game Wednesday night. Fischer staged a 30-minute'walkout shortly after the play began Wednesday, complaining that a movie camera 150 feet away was making him nervous.
