British Open Starts Wednesday Sot Preparing Properly to Battle Jack-Player Star-Gazette POR difference (five hours). Jack already has made that adjustment. I don't care how much or how often you travel, No one ever gets accustomed to that time change. "It would be good for golf if Jack won them all. He has already crated world-wide interest.

If he wins at Muirfield all the world will be watching the PGA in Michigan next now, 42, was the last man to have a major chance in the Slam. "I won the Masters and the U.S. Open in 1960. They were the first two," he recalled. "Then I went to St.

Andrews for the British. The fourth round was rained out for something like the first time in 50 years. "When he finally got it in, Kel Nagle eagled the 17th hole to beat me by one stroke. That blew the whole thing. "That could happen to Jack.

You never know. It could be anything. Rain. Somebody playing out of their mind. A penalty, you never know." KORT ERIE, Ont AP) Gary Player says the three men nost likely to stop Jack Nicklaus are staking the Golden Bear a "great advantage because we aren't preparing properly." Arnoi i Palmer says Nicklaus has "the best opportunity of iny player in history who has been in position to attempt the lam." Iee Trevino says "Jack is definitely going to have an advantage," this week when he attempts to add the British Open atle to the Masters and U.S.

Open crowns he's already icquired this season. Player, Tevino and Palmer, who just finished competing in the Canadian Open, are ranked the chief threats to Nicklaus in his quest for the never-accomplished Grand Slam of golf a sweep of the Masters, American and British opens, and the PGA national championship in a single year. Nicklaus bypassed the Canadian national championship in order to go to Scotland a week early to prepare for the 102nd British Open that begins Wednesday in Muirfield. 'I'm convinced that is is the way to prepare for a major tournament," Palmer said. "His biggest danger is that he might get tired or bored, which is the same thing.

But, with him going for the Slam, I don't think that's likely to happen. "He's going to have pressure, a different kind of pressure," said Palmer, who has been there. "It's not at all like the pressure you have wherf you're playing week to week and trying to win a tournament. This is something else. "And if he wins the British, it's going to be even greater in the PGA," which is scheduled in Birmingham, Aug, 3-6.

"Winning the British is not a matter of economics for Jack," Palmer said. "It's simply personal pride, and personal accomplishments." Player, the doughty little South African, who with Nicklaus JULY 11,1972 PAGE 12 is one of four players ever to win all four titles in a career, agreed with Palmer on Nicklaus' chances of completing the Slam. "Nicklaus has the greatest chance there ever was for the Slam," he said. "Arnold, Trevino and myself are not preparing ourselves well enough. We're going to have to get adjusted to that time Piniella's Homer Sinfo Orioles Cash's Clouts Put Tigers on Top loneers a rt By AL MALLKTTK over Texas.

The 1970 Elrnira righthander, who made EL history when Reading's Bill Wlssell drove the first pitch of the 1970 season over the right field wall at Dunn for a home run, is 8-3 this season. Evansville, a Brewers' farm, is leading the league by nine games Manager Moss sounded off at major league clubs who send down players and fail to follow through on insisting that they report immediately. "I don't understand why it is that it takes a couple of guys sent down to bolster us up to five days to arrive whereas the two players ordered up somehow seem to arrive in time for the game that night." Moss said he knew every minor league manager goes through this tension but that it didn't have to be 1969 Elrnira catcher Fred Kendall had his greatest major league batting day Friday with a pair of San Diego homers while teammate Jerry Morales (Elrnira 1969) was the recipient of the bases loaded walk in the 14th inning that gave the Padres a 1-0 win over the Mets. How about that Lou Pinlella making the cover and being the subject of the lead story in' The Sporting News? Lou is one changed man since his 1965 Pioneer days when he slammed bat helmets, kicked bats and cursed loud and long at the end of a third strike swing.

Today Lou is KC's personality kid and one of the most popular guys in the American League. Incidentally, Lou still holds the all-time Eastern League record of hitting three home rus in a game and he did it at spacious, high-fenced Dunn Field, which makes the accomplishment even greater. It's mid-season 1972 and time to take a look "at what some of our ex-Pioneers of recent vintage are doing this year. Mike Jackson, that whippet-fast southpaw who set an all-time Elrnira win streak record of nine in 1971, has just set an all-time American Association record of 42 successive scoreless innings In winning five straight games for Omaha. Jackson, whom Kansas City dealt to St.

Louis on a conditional basis last Fall, was returned to the Royals this spring when he failed to impress Cardinal coaches. Jackson apparently is one of those pitchers who can win big in the minors, but impresses no one in the majors. Another is Monty Montgomery, who took over in Elrnira when Jackson was called up In June 1971. Monty immediately picked up the slack for Harry Malmberg's club and was called up by KC at the end of the season. He impressed and was counted upon to make the big club this season.

Monty failed, was shipped back to Omaha and is really struggling with a 4.36 ERA. Six other ex-Elmirans struggling this season are Keith Marshall, Ed Assaf, Dan Haynes and Chuck Day, all with Omaha, and Tommy Harmon and Tommy Joyce at Jacksonville. Marshall, who wears himself into almost exhaustion in the spring, is having his poorest season ever at Omaha, hitting a meager .193. Haynes is at .222 and Day at .234. Neither Harmon nor Joyce are hitting .250 at Jacksonville.

Assaf hasn't won a game at Omaha this season. Mickey McGulre, after a fast start in which his batting average hovered around .375, still is hitting a strong .313 for Tucson in the Pacific Coast League John Matlas is back home in Hawaii and belting .295 with 11 homers for the Islanders Fred (Firecracker) Rico has eight homers and is hitting .300 for Tacoma 1943 Elrnira catcher Leg Moss has his Salt Lake City Angels two games from the top in the PCL East while 1959 Elrnira skipper Andy 0 0 0 0 MStanleycf Shellenbkp Bntlnerph Panther Harrahss Mmcher lb Maddoxpr B'llingslt Kmgr Fordrf Lovittocf RandieTb Stnhousep Jones 3b 4 0 3 0 ARodrqez3b 3 10 0 3 111 Brnkmanss 3 0 11 5 0 0 0 Coleman 4 0 10 0 0 0 0 5 0 4 0 HMIer 3 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 Total 31 8 3 0 0 0 1 it- 0 0 0 0 0 14 0 0 0 Total 36 3 10 3 Texas 0 Detroit 3 DP Texas 1.
