Saturday, March 12, 1988 Hattiesburg AMERICAN 7A Black run skiers, Christians pack boldness The kids were sprucing up our classroom for some visitors, and one bulletin board had turned into spring. They wanted to know if it could be adorned with these words, "Spring is here. Thank goodness spring vacation is near." My answer was quick, "Yes, by all means, do it; then let's all rejoice over the fact! Spring break means one thing for my family skiing in Colorado. When I tell my school kids that, they find it hard to believe that their teacher can ski. I get questions like: "Can you really "Do you ski down a mountain?" "Yes." "Do you fly down like on TV?" "No." "How do you get down?" "Slowly and carefully." The first time I ever skied, it was for survival nothing more, nothing less.

I ruined a big toe with a pair of boots that didn't fit. I thought it was supposed to hurt because every other part of me was aching. Getting back to the questions my students asked about skiing, one fascinated sixth grader wanted to know, "What is the most important thing you need to know about skiing?" The answer for me was easy. You need to keep your balance. make a skier out of me; but it did put me in a place where I could ski.

So it is, the right relationship with God will allow us to place ourselves before God so he can change us, use us and have fellowship with us. Only out of this relationship can there develop boldness and power to ski on the black runs of the Christian faith. By the way, as you read this, hopefully we are in Colorado skiing. If you need me, send someone to find me. As always, I'll be on the safe green runs having a bold, exciting time.

BiUie Buckley is an elementary school teacher and pastor's wife living in Petal. fall, I can't get up unless I take off my skis. Who wants to unsnap and unload, resnap and reload two long sticks every ten minutes? I soon learned there were three types of trails to ski on the green runs for beginner skiers like me, the blue runs for the more advanced daring skiers and the black runs for the "big boys and girls" who are bold and foolish. I got to thinking about this, and I have decided that just as we ski on different runs, we are all on different runs in our growing as Christians. We have to start on the green runs, but God didn't make us for the safe green runs or even for the exciting blue runs.

He made us for those bold black runs. I've noticed that when my sons and their friends ski those black runs, they do so with freedom and abandonment. I think this freedom in the Christian life must come from an intimate relationship with God himself. God took the initiative and went to a great deal of trouble to establish and maintain this bold relationship with us. He not only presented information about himself, but he presented us with himself born 2,000 years ago in the city of David called Bethlehem.

That first year, the scariest part of skiing was getting off the ski lift. Riding a ski lift definitely did not j-eartline BY BILLIE BUCKLEY This is quite necessary for me because if I loose my balance and "Bulletin Board jpcoming Services NOW STUDY THE BIBLE BY MAIL!
