(JP) Cures of more than 00 per cent of acute syphilis cases by combined artificial fever and arsenic in less than 48 hours was reported to the Medical Society of the State of New York today.

The report was made by Dr. Nathaniel Jones, of Jacksonville, Fla. The said that the fever Intensifies the effects of the arsenic, which is given in the form of mepharsen. Three methods of combining the two treatments were tried, In the one that worked best, mepharsen, was given the night bpfore fever; then next day five hours of fever up to 106 degrees Fahrenheit; and afterward more mepharsen. This arsenic was given intravenously.

Of this group only 5.9 per cent had relapses. The entire hospital period is 48 hours, the actual treatment however running only about 8 hours total. Those taking lt usually are able to return to work upon leaving the hospital. The cost If low $30 per case. A hollow needle with a hole in the side, near the end.

instead Of at the tip, was described to the society as Improving spinal anesthesia. The side hole enables the to direct the drug either up or down the spinal column, by a turn of the needle, This gives anesthesia more exactly in the part of the body desired, and longer-lasting The reason Is that spinal anesthetics have to hit an exact location, one not always easy to get with a needle point. If above or below the right spot, the directional hole can be turned to hit the target. MERCIFUL '( Ol'KT LOS ANGELES-W'J James W.
