For six years she has been the lovable aunt on CBS-TV's The Andy Griffith Show, and for as many years she has been going to a psychiatrist who has been helping her separate the "real" from the "fantasy." "You can't be an actress for 40 years, living in a world of make believe, and not be affected," said the frank Miss Bavier, an attractive 63-year-old, on a recent visit here. "Sooner or later your mind begins to click and my case you are wise to seek professional help." The actress says she has not employed the doctor because she fears she is insane. She employs him to keep her sanity so she can quit being Aunt Bee after working hours and become the charming Frances Bavier. "It's terribly difficult, you know, because Aunt Bee is so much nicer than the real me," she said. "Unlike plays in which you play a character only a couple of hours each night, you must be a television character 12 hours per day," she continued.

"And even when you go home people don't recognize you as you but for the character you play. It can be awfully confusing." Of course, Miss Bavier has no intention of quitting the Griffith show, which has been rewarding, and has provided a solid gold nest egg for her old age. APRIL 26 (C) Denotes Color 6:00 P. M. We are like a family a hillbilly family which looks with a jaundiced eye on all outsiders," say Miss Bavier about the series. Ronny Howard, who plays little Opie, is an example of the actress' affection for her fellow cast members. "I treat him like an adult," she says about the 12-year-old actor. "He is an equal and I often take pointers from him on how to play a scene." Her only trouble is Aunt Bee whom she fears she likes too much.
