The Lindsays met in 1946 at the wedding of a friend. Mary, a Vassar College psychology major and daughter of a Connecticut bank vice president, was a bridesmaid. "I suppose the secret to our marriage is the fact that he's such a nice guy," she said. "We haven't had a real fight ever. Mrs. Lindsay said all her youngsters -the three youngest attend private schools--have developed an immunity to criticism of their father and have only a passing interest in politics. Mrs. Lindsay has lost her early enthusiasm for housework. She, admits she can't cook and has said she hates being asked for her favorite recipe.

She is more likely to be found bicycling through Central Park than studying grocery list.
