By OWEN JONES CORNING The John Carroll-Hank Wheat duo, with very steady playing, easily defeated Bud Castilow-Brian Lanahan, 6-5, here Monday to capture the championship of the 29th Annual Corning Country Club Invitational Best Ball Tournament. Due to the heavy rains of Sunday afternoonthis championship match was played5 Monday with ideal conditions. Carroll-Wheat, who defeated Dick Fluman-Harry Forker 3-2 to gain the finals, didn't lose a hole all day.

while Castilow-Lanahan, who nipped the Sindelar's Horseheads, a father-son team, were victims of some poor chipping and approach shots. Castilow and Lanahan had their troubles on the first nine as they had four bogies which left them five holes down at the turn. Their misery started when they bogied three consecutive holes 2-3-4 and Carroll-Wheat grabbed each one with pars. The par four, 357-yard dogleg 13th was the last hole for Castilow-. Lanahan. Carroll and Wheat both rifled seven-iron approach shots to the pin. Carroll missed his 20-foot birdie attempt but Wheat curled in an 18-footer to end the match and give he and Carroll the CCC Best Ball title. The Carroll-Wheat team was two-under par holes while Castilow-Lanahan was four-over.

The turning point of the match was the par five 548 yard fifth hole as both Carroll-Wheat were in trouble after, their second shots. However, Carroll again pulled through as he lofted an eight iron two feet away from the pin. He stroked in the birdie putt and Carroll-Wheat were in a commanding four hole lead. On the eighth, Carroll cracked another booming drive and took a par four while Castilow-Lanahan faltered with their fourth bogie. 1 ,4 I I (r ill iKtim i I -1 I i 1 I i i fr-iiSitii TitT I -iaiftiiiii ilwr-- urn in in rrrr imii Mi ft mft timrwutf.v ffi vW Elmira Plays Twin Bill Tonight Pioneer Bats Awaken in 10-2 Win three-base hits by Bob Mar-, cano, Jim Norris, Doby Johnson and Harry Shaughnessy.

Marcano's three-bagger, his fifth of the year, kept his Eastern League lead in that department. After the Carnavals scored the first of two unearned runs of Dan Hatchell (he pitched a 5-hitter) in the first inning, the Pioneers began their splurge in the home second. Marcano opened with his three-bagger, a 390-foot drive off the leftfield fence, and Norris then boomed his triple on the next pitch. Ambrose's sacrifice fly plated Norris. The Pioneers score in the third when Bill Flowers reached on an error, and Shaughnessy walked.

Open jinx continues. An Open also-ran 33 times, he competed in 25 consecutive Opens starting in 1937. His closest shot at a title came in 1939 at the Philadelphia Country Club, when with victory in his grasp he bogeyed the 17th and then shot a triple-bogey eight on the final hole. Last year, due to a mix-up in the mail involving Snead's application, he did not even compete in the qualifying rounds. SandeTs, the flashy dresser who won the Kemper Open on the pro tour this weekend, carded a 68-67 135 to lead qualifiers at Charlotte.

Other tour regulars who qualified there included Hubert Green, Don Bies, Rod Funseth, Lou Graham, Kermit Zarley, Dave Marr, Bob Murphy, Bob Lunn, Mason Rudolph, Dave Hill, Charles Siff ord, Jim Jamieson, Bruce Devlin and Gibby Gilbert. Associated Press "That's about the worst I've ever played in my life," declared a very hot, very tired and very disappointed Sam Snead after failing Monday in his bid to qualify for this year's U.S. Open. After a fine morning round of 69 in sectional qualifying at the Charlotte, N.C., Country Club, ISnead ballooned to a 78 in the afternoon round. His 147 total was 12 strokes back of Doug Sanders, the top qualifier.

More importantly, it was two strokes over the qualifying limit. So Snead, winner of 84 PGA-co-sponsored tournaments but not a single U.S. Open, will be absent when the field of 150 tees off at Pebble Beach, Calif. June 15-18. Snead, who turned 60 nine days ago, had five bogeys on the front nine of his second round.

But even with that, he would have managed to qualify if he was able to par the back nine. Instead, he bogeyed the 17th, then three-putted for a double bogey on the par four, 423-yard 18th.
