PAGE THURSDAY, MAY Indians Still Lack Good Roles THE MORNING HERALD-THE EVENING STANDARD 1 By DICK KLEINER HOLLYWOOD (NBA) The blacks are making it in movies and TV. Orientals and Mexican Americans have shown signs of progress in getting good parts. But, for the American Indian, nothing and nowhere. And yet there are Indian actors with talent. When Stan Margulics produced "I Will Fight No More Forever" for ABC he wanted an all-Indian cast.

He got one and he says he was surprised at the qualify of his Indian actors. He hadn't expected the level of talent he found. The girl he got to play Chief i i a Redfearn, is typical. Part Cherokee, she has been around the Hollywood scene for a few years, struggling to get work. It hasn't been easy for her even though she is extremely good to look at and seems to be a reasonably talented actress, "I haven't had as much (rouble as some," she says.

"I'm not as dark as most Indians and I can pass for other races. But 1 still get the same reaction most of the time -'Gee, you look too Fishing Safety HARRISBtJRG Fishing is fun on State Park lakes but all boaters are reminded by the a vironmental Resources that everyone on board must have a U. S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device. Lifesaving devices must be in good and serviceable condition, and may not be lorn or slit in any way.

There should be no torn straps, broken or missing buckles, or broken zippers, and they are not in the boat to be sat upon. This safety message was issued by the Bureau of State a ot vironmental Resources, in cooperation with the Office of Walercraft Safety, Pennsylvania Fish Commission. She is actually less than half Indian. The Indian blood comes from her father, who is three-quarter Cherokee. Her mother is English and Irish, a descendant of Carrie Nation, she says.

Linda Redfearn was born in Dallas, grew up beautiful. After high school, she modeled at Neiman-Marcus for a few years, then married a Texan and had Iwo sons. The marriage ended and she moved here and became fashion co-ordinator for a big Los Angeles department store. But 'she always had harbored a secret yen to act. Even as a high school student she did all the school plays.

So she decided to throw caution (and her good job) to the winds and announced that she was an actress. At first, she got by because she is beautiful. For a year or so, she was Laugh-In's resi- I i a She was in "Omega Man" and the TV musical, "L'il Abner," and she appeared on many talk shows. For a few years, she quit the business, because a boy friend wanted her to. But that didn't work either, and she came back to acting.

One of the first things an actor needs is an agent. Linda says her Indian blood made it hard for her to get one. She says finding an agent who would accept her was a problem. "Even though it's chic now to be Indian," she says, "we are still looked on as a separate part of our society. We are not people.

We are Indians." But she persevered, finally found an agent who would Graduates At Chatham i a a a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Cyril Kanterman of 125 Ben Lomond Uniontown, received her degree at Chatham College commencement exercises in Pittsburgh vou Can't Do Better Anywhere! 6 year savings certificates $1000 minimum deposit Effective annual yield is based on daily compounding of interest. She is far from a militant and yet she understands the militants' thinking.

I i a are becoming militant," she says, "although I hate to see it happen. But it looks as though this country will have to go through some sort of bath before there is true equality. I'm proud of being an Indian but I'm also proud of being a human being. I like to be judged as a person." Her role on "I Will Fight No More Forever" was one of the few she has gotten because she has Indian blood. Generally, it's the other way around she loses parts because of her Indian ancestry.

She has never been able to get a part in a commercial they use blacks but no Indians to sell products. For a time, she tried to get away from "Indianness." She cut her hair short which accented her I i a heritage. But now she's decided to let it grow back again. "Sophia Loren is Italian and looks it," Linda says. "But she doesn't go around dressed like an Italian peasant.

Yet people expect me to wear a feather and go 'ugh' a lot." She says everybody in and out of the film business -expects Indians to look like the cliche Indian. They are continually surprised by the fact that she looks and dresses smartly and wears make-up expertly. "We've been living with a cliche for generations," she says. "But there are well- educated Indians and there are Indians who understand fashion." She says the cliche that reservation Indians are lazy and docile and have no ambition angers her because it is too often true. She says they have been beaten into docility "but the next generation may be different." Of late, the cause of the Indian has been taken up by a variety of people in a variety of ways.

She thinks most of these attempts have been misguided. "Marlon Brando," she says, "has his heart in the right place but he should have better counseling. That Oscar i a Littlefeather came up and made that speech I cringed inside. I was embarrassed. That was not the timHor place for a such a gesture.

"His heart may be in the right place, but he should use his head, not his heart. That land he donated to the Indians. He still owes some $300,000 in taxes on it. He said he'll take care of it but he hasn't so far." She is also critical of the "Billy Jack" movies. She says they made her embarrassed to be an Indian when she saw them.

"I think they hurt the Indian cause," she says. "We were seen and heard but not in the right light. Certainly, it was not a step forward." And yet she believes that, in the. long run, it all helps have to keep throwing mud on the wall until some of it sticks." As for her own future she wants to do big things. There has never been an Indian star and she wouldn't mind being the first.

But she isn't just hanging around the house, waiting for stardom to strike. She's working on "a project" for her Indian people. No details but you can bet it's pro-Indian.
