STAR -GAZETTE. Hroira. N.Y, Wtdatsday. Jily 7. Kenyans to compete Where have you gone.

Bob Waterfield? NAIRO, Kenya (AP) An AGAIN, THE RAMS office didn't know a thing about Water- 8J-member Kenyan squad, the biggest contingent from Africa, left here Tuesday for the Montreal Olympics. Kenya and other African countries had threatened to pull out of the Games because of the participation of New Zealand. They objected to that country's sporting links with white-supremacist South Africa. A team spokesman said no firm decision has yet been taken on the New Zealand issue. The Kenyan contingent including track and field athletes, boxers and shooters-has several medal prospects.

The search for a Ram AI Mallette Bob Waterfield, Bob Waterfield Where have you gone? If that sounds like the introduction into a soap opera, it might well be. Bob Waterfield, you see, can't be contacted. The Hall of Fame football quarterback who once was married to bosomy Jane Russell just isn' available. Why are we trying to find him? Well, he just might be the greatest athlete ever born in Elmira. That's right, Bob Waterfield was born in Elmira.

This isn'treally a revelation. A lot of us 'knew he lived in the area for a year or so after birth but we were told that it was Wellsburg. But' when Bob was born in St. Joseph's Hospital July 26, 1920, the Waterfields, pop Staton and mom Frances Gallagher, resided on Cleveland just off W. Water St.

THE WATERFIELD search began some days ago after Dave Finnell returned from a visit to the Professional Football Hall of Fame at Canton, Ohio. He noticed the bust of Waterfield and the printed fact that he was born in Elmira. Dave told his buddy Charley Robinson, and Robinson called us. APPARENTLY, THEY told a few other football buffs, too. because some other callers wanted to know why.

in this Bicentennial year when we are honoring our heroes, we are bypassing a guy born right here in Elmira! One caller commented, "I'm not one to take anything away from the late Ernie Davis. He was the greatest thing that ever happened to Elmira. But Ernie, wasn't born here. Why not give field. But the- office girl did say, "Let me switch you to Rams Scouting.

Maybe they know something." We told Rams Scouting the story of why we needed to contact Waterfield, The girl listened, then commented, "We haven't heard from Mr. Waterfield in some time. We can't help you." pleaded for an address, a phone number. She put us on hold, then came back and said. "Yes.

we do have Mr. Water-field's home phone number. But it'5 unlisted and we aren't allowed to give it qut to anybody. Anyway, he byes out in the valley (San Fernando Valley), and he's usually off fishing this time of the year." We pleaded some more and finally the girl offered to contact Waterfield and have him return to call to us. She promised she'd tell him why it was important that we contact him.

Needless to say, Waterfield never returned the call. MAYBE VAN NITS. can claim Bob as its finest scholastic football talent ever. Maybe UCLA can look at its 1941-42-44 fixjtball program and ooint to Bob Waterfield. OB.

Certainly the Rams can claim him. First Cleveland when he won XFL rookie and MVP honors his first year in the pros (1945), then Los Angeles when the Rams moved to Los Angeles in 1946. But Elmira has a piece of this great football talent, too. If we can find him. So if you ever read this, Bob Waterfield.

we're still waiting. After all he was born here." So we hopped onto the phone in search of Bob Waterfield. We wanted to know what Bob remembered if anything about Elmira.

Had he ever been back here? We do know that he (and Jane) contacted Wes Derr, registrar of Chemung County vital statistics, to get information of Bob's birth. THE PHONE CALLS began. The Ijos Angeles Rams didn't know whereabouts, even though Waterfield probably was the greatest Ram of them alias well as the head coach for a spell. Folks in the sports departments of the LA papers hadn't heard about him in years. But the paper did tell us to contact a place called the Citiwns Savings Athletic Foundation.

Success! The C'SAF did have a Waterfield. Trouble was it was the wrong one. And we were advised to contact the LA Rams. HYORAUUtiCO. ElillBA ST.

"We have made great strides in gymnastics." The Russians are heavy favorites to win most of the women's medals, including the team gold, at Montreal, and the Romanians are a good bet to finish second. -Gymnastics got a big boost in popularity four years ago in Munich, mostly because of the performance of an unheralded 17-year-old. S4-pound Soviet waif named Olga Korbut. Television zeroed in on Miss Korbut. watched her win two individual gold medals and then saw her collapse in tears when she blew her routine on the uneven parallel bars to lose her chance at the all-around individual gold.

She became a star overnight and led the Russians on a highly-succesful U.S. tour shortly thereafter. Miss Korbut will be back in Montreal but. as in Munich, she is only No. 2 on the Russian team.

Lyudmila Ttirishche.va. a pretty, dark-haired. 24-ycar-old is the ace of the squad and Russia's best bet for the all-around gold medal. Miss Tunshcheva, who won the all-around in Munich, is deadly serious about her sport, to the exclusion of all else. "All my life and all my love are given to gymnastics." she says.

Miss Comaneci. the 15-year-old sensation who is the current Eunpean champion, is rated by many the best gymnast in the world and is favored over Miss Turishcheva for the all-around Olympic title.
