Orioles Seek New Catcher BALTIMORE (AP) The Baltimore Orioles are shopping for a replacement for catcher Gus Triandos who will submit to surgery Wednesday on a damaged thumb. The Orioles have Joe Ginsberg and Clint Courtney behind Triandos, but Courtney is recuperating from a serious infection of an index finger. Gene Green, an outfielder catcher acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals last winter, is on Baltimore's farm club at Miami, but the Orioles reportedly are seeking a from another major league club. The Orioles announced Sunday that Triandos is being put on the 30-day disabled list.

Dr. Erwin Mayer, team physician, said the 29-year-old catcher should be able to play "within three or four weeks." It is hoped the surgery will relieve a nerve restriction which developed in Triandos' right thumb after he was struck on the back of the hand by a foul tip last Aug. 1. Triandos skidded to a .216 bat- ling average after the injury last season and is hitting only .150 this year. He hit 23 homers before the njury last year but has hit only two since.

W.Va disappointed but not discouraged," Coach Gene Corum said in the wake of his West Virginia varsity's 21-14 loss to the WVU Alumni in a spring football practice game. "We didn't expect to be able to run against that big Alumni line Saturday, but we did hope to. do a little better in passing against them," Corurn declared. Indeed, the Varsity showed little of a running attack, winding up with a net loss of 16 yards in rushing.

The regulars completed seven of 16 passes for 91 yards. Corum termed the play of his chaiges in the second half much better than that in the first half. "They seemed to be a little hesitant playing against some of those big names," Conim said in reference to Sam Huff and Joe Marconi, a couple of pro stalwarts in the Alumni lineup.
