Coach Vann gave the squad a rest today, although he planned to show them the movie of the Kentucky encounter either this afternoon or tonight.

Only new Injury Incurred Saturday night was a bad lick In the eye suffered by End Ivan Rosamond. Coach Vann said it would be two three days before extent of the injury will be known. Fast Start The Southerners started out like house afire. On their second offensive play, Bubber Phillips broke off right tackle for 23 yards and Prank Spruiell promptly followed' unnti ui tuc onuir uiainuue put the ball on Delta's 23. Bubber circled right end to the four and it looked like the start of a rout.

But when Clint Arnold was dropped for a two-yard loss on the next play, Holmes elected to pass and Sewell Intercepted In the end zone, running the ball out to the 12-yard line. That cooled the Southerners off and the next two times they got the ball, they went nowhere. Then late the first quarter, Delta started a drive from its own 31-yard line that wound up In a touchdown early in the second period. A couple of good pases by Quarterback Bill Durham, 13-vard run bv Sewell and a rr. mn.l rnl.1 l.

ovii.iM iuui fvunii.jr HBiuav 11 1 that gave the Oreenles a first down the one-yard line figured in the march. Durham scored on a quarterback sneak. Kauchlck broke through to block Tony Orezaffl's placement attempt. Southern took the ensuing kick-off and drove to the Delta 14 but there Phillips fumbled and the Oreenles recovered. Bubber made up for this by sup plying the spark that finally brought the Southerners to life midway through the third period.

Orezaffl punted from his own 23 and the ball apparently was about to roll dead the Southern 33 with a Delta end hovering over It. Suddenly Phillips scooped the ball from under the Deltan's nose, pivoted away from him and set sail down the sidelines. The fleet halfback finally was stopped on the Delta 28 after a 37-yard dash. He was roughed up in the process end the Oreenles drew a 15-yard penalty to the 13. Morris Brown carried once and then Jim Owen four times to get It across from there.

Chicken Howard's was wide and the score remained 6-8. Second Touchdown The next time they got the ball, Southerner's took off again from their own 28. scoring in five plavs. Phillip picked up aeven. Holmes passed to Coggin on the Delta 42 and he dodged his way to 20 as the third quarter ended.

Langford then took over, running left end for eight yards, right for to the one-yard line and scoring off left tackle. Howard converted. But the amazing Oreenles didn't know that meant they mere supposed to be licked. After James Kelly returned the kickoff to the 30, Darry Wade dashed 10 yards. Bobby Barbour 18 and Kelly 29 before he caught from behind by Arnold 1 I I HAPPY" I James Stewart mi' j0an FontaineJ ber and a Delta State end were standing rlcht over In a flash Bubber cooped up the ball and was gone before the Delta man knew what was happening he couldn't have batted an eye, he didn't have Bubber was tackled after a 37-yard Thinks like that probably helped Bubber steal those 60 bases during the baseball season.

The one-handed catch of that pass in the closing minutes by Cliff Coggln will long be remembered by those who saw It Is impossible for us to describe how Cliff did it because we haven't figured it out There was Just no stopping little Eddie (My Son) In short, he was A 35-year-old right-handed pitcher they wouldn't shell out $3000 for back In 1340 is one of the main rea-sonj why the sliding New York! Yankees, who watched their Amer-j lean league lend disappear over the weekend, mav not get a slice of the 1B49 World Series melon That old righthander, Ellis Kinder. hs just accounted for 23 of the 93 victories registered by the red-hot Boston Red Sox, who are quite confident today that they will win the Junior loop pennant and then take on and defeat either the St. Louis Cardinals or Brooklyn Dodgers, whoever it may be, in the Series And don't think the Bosox haven't earned that confidence They whipped the Yankees on Saturday and came back on Sunday to do it again Kinder was the "Yank Tamer" on Sunday and Marvelous Mel Pornell, who has won two more than Killer Kinder There's no doubt about it. Kinder and Pamell plus a couple of sluggers by the names of Ted Williams and Vern Stephens will be heralded as the heroes. If Joe McCarthy's boys make It, and there's not much money floating around that says they won't Klnder'a first complete season In organized baseball was 1039 He played for Jackson, In the Kitty league and struck out 200 batters while winning 17 and losing 12 The next year, still playing for Jackson, he whiffed a total of 307 batters, setting a Kitty loop record in that department His 21-9 won-lost record for that season gave him a 38-21 slate for two seasons The Yanks picked up his contract on a conditional basis and shifted him to their Blng-hH nipt on club in the Class A Eastern league He pitched in six games, winning three and losing thfee, before the Yankees decided he didn't have "a good enough fast ball to ever make the majors" and backed out on their half of the deal.

So. Kinder was returned to Jackson, where he aent on to win 11 and lose alx in that season The next year Ellis started with Jnckson again and had won six and lost to when he was acquired by Memphis of the Southern association for relief duty Memphis' Chicks didn't use him much (he won two and lost three for them in 1943 and was on the "suspended list" in 1943) until 1944 when he won 19 and lost six for them He was called up for military service in 1945 after he had been purchased by the St. Iouis Browns, who were In dire need of relief chunker So. it was 1944 before the 185-pounder from Atkins, got Into the big time Although he worked in a total of 33 games that year, his record shows that he only won three and lost three After winning elsht and losing It for the Brownies In 1947, he was traded on Nov, 18 of that year to the Bed Sox with Inflelder mil Hltchcx for PitdvT Cfc-m Dreiswerd, Inflelder Sam Dent, an unnsmed playw and a reported $65,000 Last season. Kinder didnt do too much for the BoSox.

After a bad start, he closed the year with five straight wtna to round out a 10-7 season He as slow starting again this year but he didn't wait very long On June he had a 4-4 record Since i June 9, he has won ONLY 19 out 20 games (im think tht Ytnkms wilt wis lh WORLDS URCEST SELLER AT lOt 7 PAY immmii Urn -ra I Mississippi Southern has two weeks to prppare for its next foot-ball game the Homecoming encounter with the highly touted Mc-Murry collee Indians of Abilene, Texas, Saturday, Oct. 8. And Judging by their performance in barely squeezing by the Delta State Teachers college Oreenles 20-13 here Saturday night, the South erners will need every minute of it. Without meaning to take a thing from the Oreenles, who fielded an alert, hard-hitting and very capable ball club, the Southerners must show plenty of improvement or they have a rough road ahesd. Delta has a good team, probably the best in the history of the school, but the Oreenles don't figure to be as strong as any of the remaining Southern foes except possibly Louisville, Delta scored first to lead A-0 at halftlme.

the count was knotted at 13-13 with less than seven minutes to ro and the final outcome wasn't certain until Halfback Davis Mel ton Intercepted a Oreenle pass on the Inst play of the game. Departments in which the Southerners showed the greatest need for improvement were offensive line play, blocking and quarterbacklng. In the first half, especially, the ball carriers were having to do most of their ground-gaining on their own, as Oreenles frequently hit them behind the line of scrimmage. Poor Judgment on when to pass probably cost a touchdown early In the first quarter and could easily have resulted In a tie game had one been intercepted In the last two minutes of play. With a new coaching staff and new men in several kev positions it is not surprising that the Southerners are off to a slow start and it Is reasonable to assume they are going to get better.

Bright Spots On the bright side Saturday night were; (1) Brilliant defensive play by End Boots McCormlck, who turned In one of the finest performances! ever given by an end on Paulkneri field. Ed Kauchlek's line-backing I ana tne work or Tackle Dong Taylor also stood out in generally good defensive play. (2 Trie pawing of Quarterback Bobby Holmes, who comoleted 10 or 14 tosses for 137 yards and the amazing receiving of Cliff Coggin. Used mostly on offense, as he was playing with a shoulder Injury that made his left arm almost useless, Cliff proved himself a better pass-catcher with one hand than most ends are with two. (3) The running of Ed langford.

Vann's Comments Coach Pie Vann said todv he Is "pretty welll satisfied" with the Saturday night showing. "I'm not pleased with the tack-ling and blocking, but the bovs showed Improvement all around and I like the way they were able to come from behind," he added. ''Delta was primed for us and we were still bruised tip pretty badly from the Kentucky game. I was very welt pleased with Eddie langford'i ability to carry the ball, "I was disappointed In the end play except for the defensive work of McCormlck and, of course, the passing catching by Coegln.
