Heart specialists finally agreed that it was "better for him to play than not to play," and he worked his way back to duty in the Tiger bullpen. He proved his recovery was complete with his dazzling 1973 performance, which teammate Jim Northrup described as "the best job I've ever seen since I've been in the major leagues." Slugger Frank Howard characterized Hiller's '73 season as "the kind of thing you see once in a think I'm a better man for what I went through," Hiller says. "I 'big-timed' it too much before my heart attack. I think I was just trying to fool myself. I also put too much pressure on myself.
