Put Up Game JUDY GARLAND, DATE GET IN SCUFFLE a aw. rv -ntrm at Fight In Loss To Carswell By ROBERT H. CLEVELAND Mississippi Southern's griddera play another teem from Texas this week, with hop of faring; better against the McMurry eollege Indians of Abilene than they did against Fort Worth's Carswell Air Force Bombers Saturday night.

The star-studded Bombers dispelled ail local theories about service teams being listless, unorganized, etc, they powered their way past the scrapping Southerners, 36-0. MeMurrys Indians come here this Saturday night for their third bout with the Southerners. The aeries is all even at the present. Southern having won 55-32 here In 1949 and McMurry having triumphed 37-19 In Abilene last season. In their tussle with the Redskins, the Southerners wyi be returning to competition with a team in their wn class after two fine performan-a aunt nut mnlor calibre rluhs.

They drew high praise from the coaches of LSU a week ago and from Capt. Bobby Dobba and other members of the Carswell coaching staff Saturday night. "We know now why Southern is at the head of Us class." Carswell Line Coach Tom Whitley said. The accident was made noteworthy the presence of Actress Judy Garland on the icene. Luft, a friend of Miss Garland, was booked on a count of being drunk in an automobile.

He was released on 100 ball. Miss Garland's attorney, who will represent Luft, said the actress was not in Luffs car, She was at a nearby cafe, he said, and came out when she heard the crash. One of the other drivers involved in the three-car accident. Charles T. Neale, 19, said his glasses got knocked off in a heated discussion with Luft and Mias Garland.

That moved the ball to the 18-yard line. Olass went back to pass on the following effort. He found several Southerners right with him. They chased him back to the two, where McDanlel hauled him down. Arkansas' Louis Shaufele came in to punt at this point.

He got his kick away well and then tucked his head and fell as the hard-charging McDanlel got to him. Much to the surprise and disgust of the fans. Referee Red Bullock tossed in the red handkerchief, ruling that Mac had "roughed the kicker." The Bombers accepted the penalty and kicked again. The Southerners lost 23 yards on the penalty. The first punt was returned to the Carswell 37.

Jim Brashler returned the second to the Southern 40. The game slowed down at this point, with the teams battling between the 30-yard markers during moat of the remainder of the first half. Second Half On -its initial second-half effort, Carswell got 31 yards In four plays to move to the Southern 35, but two penalties, one for 15 yards end marcn. The next 10 minutes were like the middle of the second quarter hard, rugged Tootball. Then Baylor's Jim Mott, a de fenalve expert, moved up from halfback to intercept one of LeOros' spot passes.

He got It at the South ern 45, after It had bounced off the flngertipa of Lang. Mott ram bled down the sidelines to the Southern seven. LeOros knocked him out of bounds there. On the first effort, Bubber Kaiser nailed Oravee for what appeared to be a loss but the ball was placed back on the seven. The Bombers used a new play from there and it paid off.

Olass pitched out to Oraves and the littfe Tul" hustler tossed a perfect strike to Tallant In the end sone for a score. Howards desperate leap to break It up was a little too early. Oraves' conversion attempt sailed wide to the left It had taken the exactly nurture lunger to score in the second half than It did in the first. Another Interception But It didn't take them long to set the stsge for the third TD. On the third play after the klckoff.

Proctor Intercepted a long LeOros paas at the Carswell 250. It was meant for McKellar, who Juat missed on hla bid to tackle Proctor. But the Rice star, whose home Is in Sourlake, Texas, got away and did some sweet running and maneuvering as he battled all the way to the Southern 35. The ball was moved on down to the 20 on a 15-yard roughness penalty against Southern. On the final play of the quarter, Lowe picked up eight yards to the 12.

Jeffrey got five on the fourth period's inaugural play. Then it was Lowe for five and Jeffrey for one. That moved It to the One and Oraves crossed the line on the next effort. His third placement try hit the goal post to leave the count at 19-0. Final Touchdown Eleven more minutes of hard football followed before the Bombers shook Jeffrey loose for a 32-yard Jaunt and the game's final score.

The run came after Hart had kicked out of trouble following W. C. Cooper's (Tennessee) interception of Freshmsn Leemon deep in Southern territory. The boot went to the South-em 48 and Lowe returned to the 43. On the third play, Jeffrey got a TUESDAY his most povzful rcfej i i V7M wlrtt JAN STERLING Rnh Arthihr PnrtAr Man Carroll Sanford (No.

45) moves up HallDaCK leie JrriCe UNO. SI), ine can look for them to win many games before the year is out." Coach Dobbs nodded In agreement. Bombers Are Great And the capacity crowd that witnessed the game left with the opinion that the Bombers probably would win several more before the year la out, too. The fans, whose only disappointment was that the Southerners lost, also were assured that the Southwest conference turns out some mighty good players as do Tulsa university and several other big name schools, Including Ole Misa and Tennessee, represented on the Carswell roster. They saw the Southerners put up a good fight against a foe that Just had too much for them.

And the fans wouldn't be off trsck In saying that the Bombers have too much for most any collegiate team In these parts, including Southeastern conference teams. The experience of the former collegiate stars with the Bombers stood out like a sore thumb. Take Quarterback Vernon Olasa for Instance. He never played any better ball for Rice Institute than he did here. And he never had better help than Tulsa's Dub Oraves and Baylor's James Jeffrey gave him In the back-field, unless it carr from Rex Proc tor, whose performance here was as outstanding as any he turned In for Rice during the past four years.

Una Play Take the defensive and effenalve play of the linemen for another Instance. End Bud Bhenrod, Tennes see's Ail-American, did so many tricks on defense that the Southern backs (and guards pulling out didn't know where they would find him on the next play. TCU's Bob Moorman, who played tackle and end. was Just as tough. Offensively, the great Bud Mc-Fadln of Texas was superb.

The Bomber backs knew they could go places with him and they stuck as close to him as ants on a lolly pop. Without reserve he is the best offensive guard who ever performed on the Mississippi Southern field. Ole Miss' Bob (Daylight) Fletch Bathsheba HURRY! HURRY! Between them they caught seven of the eight passes Carswell completed, Their ability to get open and to catch the ball kept the home team's defense well spread most of the night. After Southern's recovery of a Proctor fumble (Ouard Ed Mc-Daniel got It on tha six) had stopped their first serious threat, the Bombers drove 55 yards for a touchdown in the closing minutes of the opening quarter. Scrappy Hart got the Southern-era out of that first trouble with a fine 50-yard punt that Loyd Lowe (North Texas State) returned to the Carswell 45.

From there. Engineer Olass got his human freight train rolling to pay dirt. Passes Click After McDanlel and Tackle Jack Pulkeraon had thrown Jeffrey for a loss of one on the 44, Clasa tossed to Fletcher who was all alone on the Southern 45. Fletch was dragged down at the 38. Then Olass smote Tails nt, who was Just aa lonesome at the same spot on the opposite side.

He was caught at the 20-yard line. Oraves followed McFadln for five and Jeffrey went behind htm for seven to move the ball to the eight. Jackie Howard came up nicely from a halfback slot to nail Proctor for no gain and Olass' next pass didn't get to Fletcher. On third down, however, jenreyi swept wide to the left end, with several blockers clearing tne trail, went the distance for the score. Oraves kicked goal and the score board read 7-0.

with two and a half minutes left in the first period. Southern Threat Southern staged Us biggest threat right after tha ensuing klckoff. Bucky McElroy returned the boot from the one to the 23. Hart got three yards at left tackle. Quarterback Tom LeOroa spot-passed to Bob McKellar for six and McElroy bucked for one and the first down.

Then LeOroa pitched to Elmo Lang for eight at the 43. The final play of the Quarter was the high spot of the night for Southern. McElroy was sent wide to the left. After a short gain he was trspped but he shook loose, picked up his blockers and ram bled for 40 yards before being smacked down on the Carswell 18. It was a brilliant run that brought the crowd to Its feet and caused Coach Dobbs to put the giant Mc-Fsdln in on defense.

He got the first tsckle, too, as he nailed Tony Rouchon, who was sent wide, st the 14-yard line. Southern drew an Illegal motion penalty that set them back to the 19. LeOros tried twice to connect with Lang and failed. Baylor's James Mott spoiled the second aerial. On fourth down, LeOroa tripped for a loss of eight yards to the 37.

He was moving back to pass when he fell. Burred Football The next few minutes were spent in rugged football during which time the Southerners looked great est. Glass sent Proctor through left guard and he got five before Eddie Kauchick nailed him at the 33. Then Jimmy Brashler slapped down a Olasa pa as, but this effort waa useless as the plsy waa called fourth, he sped through the middle, cut out to the left and outran Half back Webb Farrun for the touchdown. The.e was more good down- field blocking on this play some thing the Bombers cid all night.

Graves nicked the final point. Southerners who had gained re sped of the Bombers included Mc- Ouard Pat Ferllse and Halfbacks Howard and Brashler, No body could ssy that LeOros, Hart, McElroy, Houchon, Erwin Baylot, Lang and McKellar, had done badly on offense they had Just found that the Air Force still has pretty tougn Bombers. rarwH Am Laft anda IVtrhrr, HharrM Lft tacklaa Hmlih, Hanamaialar.
