I 1 CORNING Just as the dance cquircs the best characteristics of its national origin, so Lupe Serrano brings to her ballet roles the charm, vivacity and intelligence of her native Latin America.

Recognized as one of the world's leading ballerinas, she will be seen in Swan Lake during the performance of the American Ballet Theater at the Corning Class Center Thursday, Oct. 4. Raven-haired Lupe Serrano was born in Santiago, Chile, where she lived until she was 12 years old, studying dance from the age of four. When the family moved to Mexico City she began the serious study of the ballet with Nelse Dambre. One year later, at the age of 13, she made her professional debut in "Les Sylph-ides" and her start toward international recognition.

DURING the eight years with American Ballet Theater, Lupe Serrano rose to the position of ballerina in the company, ex- iTiqimr- celling in both classical and contemporary roles. Dazzling audiences throughout the world, she received a remarkable 12 curtain calls during her performance at the Stanislavsky Theater in Moscow. This marked the first time an American ballet company had toured Russia, the traditional home of classical ballet. Members of the world-famed Bolshoi came backstage to greet her and communicate their joy. Hundreds of men and women waited for her in the rain and cold following her startling performance.

BUT HER finest hour came at a farewell party given by the U.S. Ambassador to Russia, Llewellyn Thompson. It was during this memorable evening that Galina Ulanova, prima ballerina of the Bolshoi told her: "you have a nice, easy and light technique. You are to be admired. I have learned much by looking at you." Lupe Serrano had captured Moscow.
