Many are named by subdividors, others honor old families of the city and still others recall the memories of city's war heroes VI V T ANNA make a bet you V can win? Just asK ioiks w w how Oakland's streets get their names then collect! It's as easy as that. Few people realize street names aren't merely puued out 01 a nai Dy some gent at the City Hall. But, don't wager on the number of streets in the city. No one ; . $H - ...... j i m ' ' ' '" - I I street department. The suggestions are first checked for duplication not only in Oakland, but any Eastbay city or town. They are examined for simplicity of spelling and pronounciation. There have been cases in which such names as Hocham-beau and Aldebaran real jawbreakershave raised all sorts new street, Kizer will pick one from a prepared list of names of Oakland men who lost their lives during World Wars I and II or the Korean conflict. You can always tell if a street has been named for one of these men. There is a shield beside the name on the street sign. At least 150 Oakland street signs now bear shields. Kizer admits Oakland's improved and unimproved streets have never been counted. But he estimates the number as 2500. They represent an estimated 764 miles, he says. Oakland's longest street bearing the same name is MacArthur Boulevard. Starting at Fairmount Avenue and ending at Durant Avenue, within the city limits, it is 10 miles long. Short Street is NOT the city's shortest street. It is 1150 feet long, as compared with a real shortie Hopkins Street Place, which measures 100 feet and has enough space for only three homes. San Pablo Avenue (first El Camino Real, then The County .. a. S ., '. , v. ".; vv-f J y t r - , X' f ' -a Road, then San Pablo Road) and East 14th Street are Oakland's oldest thoroughfares. Telegraph Avenue is a close runner-up. We have streets named after Presidents, great statesmen, pioneers, prominent people, cities; counties, states, countries, flowers, plants, trees, Old England, Old Spain and so forth and so on. The habit of honoring U.S. Presidents hasn't been overdone knows the answer to that one-even Oakland's Street Department. . Oakland has easy-to-say and asy-to-spell street names. And no duplications. That's because the city refuses to dismiss this job as a trifling matter. Ninety per cent of our new streets are named by subdivid-ors, but not before the names are given a foolproof test by the of Cain with the street departmentas well as mailmen, telephone operators, delivery men and you, you and you. Once the name has passed the test, given by C. M. Kizer, assistant engineer in charge of the city's block book department, it is sent to the superintendent of streets and the city planning commission for approval. If no name is suggested for a By ED SCHOENFELD Tribune Suff Writ only 13 of them are printed on street signs here. There is a Truman Avenue, which runs into MacArthur at one point, but it was Truman Avenue before Harry S. became President. The street department can't please everyone. Especially one woman who recently objected to the name of Dixie Street. . mm II imW U 1 ATV Said it sounded too much like "Pixie," so she climbed up and pasted a sign of protest over It! At last report, it was still Dixie Street Chief, reasons for renaming a street, explains Kizer, are because the present names have, been found too difficult to say or spell or if the continuation of a street doesn't bear the same name. 5500 i EUSTICE AVE.
