THE MORNING CALL, MONDAY. JULY 17, 1995 C7 Prinosil upsets Wheaton for first ATP Tour crown in juniors. "I just lost my concehtration after that point," he said. Ater splitting the next six games, Prinosil used three aces during the tiebreaker to win it 7-3 and take the first set. XS V' 'A I Xl I V'--' 'A' 0 'tr ll history.

"It gave me a lot of confidence playing so well in Paris, where I realized that I could beat almost any player in the world," said Meligeni, who beat Petr Korda and Marc Rosset in the French Open. Meligeni, who was bora in Argentina, beat second-seeded Gilbert Schaller in the opening round and fifth-seeded Carlos Costa in the semifinals of this clay-court tournament. Ranked 78th in the world before the Swedish Open, Meligeni reached his first career final in March in Mexico City, where he lost to Thomas Muster. Ruud, ranked 62nd in the world and the first Norwegian to play an ATP Tour final, led 4-3 in the first set. But he then lost eight points in a row and Meligeni went on to win the set.

Meligeni wrapped up the match by breaking Ruud in the 10th game of the second set. Top-seeded Jan Apell and Jonas Bjorkman, who won the ATP world doubles championship and helped Sweden win the Davis Cup last year, captured their first ATP title of the year by beating Jon Ireland and Andrew Kratzmann 6-3, 6-0. Indurain celebrates birthday GUZET-NEIGE, France (AP) Miguel Indurain celebrated his birthday yesterday the same way he has done so the last few years in the lead of the Tour de France. Indurain, who turned 31, came in third in the 14th stage on the 101-mile leg from St. Orens de Ga-meville to Guzet-Neige to maintain his yellow jersey.

He hopes to join Belgian Eddy Merckx, Frenchmen Jacques An-quetil and Bernard Hinault as five-time winners, but Indurain would be the first to do it in consecutive years. Italy's Marco Pantani took the stage as the race came to the edge of the Pyrenees with a rest day today before the Tour starts two days in the mountains, The 25-year-old Pantani was third in last year's Tour and had won the hard L'Alpe d'Huez stage earlier in the week. He attacked as the pack started the last 25 miles with four climbs of varying degrees left. He built a lead of almost three minutes over the pack entering the final climb, rated the hardest on the Tour's definition of steepness, length and difficulty. With rain and fog over the last hour of the race, Pantani won by 2 minutes, 31 seconds over Laurent Madouas of France.

Indurain was in the main pack until the last 2Vi miles then speeded up to almost catch Maduoas at the finish. NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) Sixth-seeded David Prinosil used a blistering first serve and strong service return yesterday to upset defending champion David Wheaton in the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships. Prinosil won 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 6-2 for his first ATP Tour title. The 22-year-old Czech native and German citizen had 16 aces and won 85 percent of the points on his first serve.

Wheaton, seeded No. 1, appeared to gain momentum in the second set when he broke Prinosil to go up 6-5, then served out the set after two deuces. But Prinosil, launching 118-mph-and-better serves, held at love in the opening game of the third set and broke Wheaton in the fourth game. Prinosil broke Wheaton in the final game, rocketing a forehand winner off Wheaton's serve on match point and letting out a yelp of delight. Prinosil said after losing the second set, he tried to concentrate more.

Prinosil started slowly, needing six deuces just to hold serve 1-1 in the first set. But then he broke Wheaton at love and held serve with an ace to go up 3-1. Trailing love-40, Wheaton surprised Prinosil with an underhand serve and followed it to the net, smashing home Prinosil's feeble return. Wheaton eventually won the game and broke Prinosil to get back on serve at 3-3. Prinosil admitted he was caught off guard by the underhand serve, which he said he last saw "once" Associated Press uong ravu id uui ia Former President George Bush and Chris Evert laugh as Bush presents Evert her enshrinement certificate into the International Tennis Hall ot Prinosil and Wheaton held serve through nine games of the second set.

Prinosil, leading 54, was within two points of victory when Wheaton bore down, holding serve, then breaking Prinosil when the German double-faulted on Wheaton's advantage. Wheaton served out the set when Prinosil missed two forehands at deuce. Though Wheaton had experience and momentum on his side, Prinosil went back to his strength and used powerful first serves to hold all four service games in the final set, while breaking Wheaton twice. Wheaton defeated Prinosil in straight sets the quarterfinals of last year's Hall of Fame tournman-ment, the only U.S. pro event playd on grass.

He said he saw a different Prinosil this time. Prinosil collected $32,600 for the victory, which moved his world ranking up 17 spots, to No. 75. Swedish Open BAST AD, Sweden (AP) Unseeded Fernando Meligeni won his first ATP Tour singles title yesterday, beating sixth-seeded Christian Ruud 64, 6-4 in the $328,000 Swedish Open.
